Toshogu Shrine is a lavishly decorated shrine complex located north of Tokyo in the city of Nikko, Japan. Many buildings are found scattered around a beautiful forest. Tokugawa Ieyasu (1543–1616), the founder of the Tokugawa Shogunate, is enshrined here. The shrine features both Shinto and Buddhist elements. What makes the shrine unique from other shrines in Japan are the gold decorations that adorn many of the buildings. Many shrines in Japan stress simplicity for the architecture of shrines.
