Antalya is a city located on the Mediterranean coast in southwest Turkey, with a very old history. Antalya’s history begins in the 2nd millennium BC. It is known that the Hittites first ruled the region. The city was influenced by the Pamphylian and Lycian civilizations in ancient times, and was an important trade and port city during these civilizations.
Antalya was founded in 158 BC by King Attalos II of Pergamon. King Attalos gave his soldiers the order to “find me heaven on earth” and his soldiers who discovered Antalya reported it to the King. The city’s name also comes from King Attalos: “Attaleia” eventually became Antalya.
During the Roman Empire, Antalya continued to develop and became an important port city of Rome. With the division of the Roman Empire into two, the city remained within the borders of the Eastern Roman Empire (Byzantium). During this period, Christianity spread to the region as an important religion, and Antalya was a part of this process.
The Seljuk period was a turning point for Antalya. In 1207, Seljuk Sultan I. Gıyaseddin Keyhüsrev conquered Antalya and brought the city under Turkish rule. During the Seljuk period, Antalya became the center of both sea and land trade due to its strategic location on trade routes.
During the Ottoman Empire, Antalya was incorporated into Ottoman territory and continued to be an important port city. Antalya developed relatively calmly during the Ottoman period, and was especially prominent for olive cultivation, agriculture and maritime trade.
With the establishment of the Republic, Antalya became a part of modern Turkey and has become an important center, especially prominent in tourism today. Thanks to its natural beauties, historical heritage and location on the Mediterranean coast, it has become a center of attraction for both local and foreign tourists.
Antalya is known as the tourism capital of Turkey and is called the pearl of the Mediterranean. It hosts millions of tourists every year with its mild climate, magnificent beaches, ancient cities and natural beauties. The world-famous Konyaaltı and Lara beaches are ideal places for those who want to explore the deep blue sea of Antalya.
Antalya stands out not only with its beach tourism but also with its rich history. Ancient settlements such as Aspendos Theater, Perge Ancient City, Olympos and Termessos are indispensable for history and archaeology enthusiasts. In addition, Kaleiçi and Yivli Minaret, which have become the symbols of the city, offer the most beautiful examples of Ottoman and Seljuk architecture.
In addition, Antalya is a paradise for nature lovers. Natural beauties such as Düden Waterfall, Kurşunlu Waterfall and Köprülü Canyon offer activities such as hiking, rafting and nature exploration. Every corner of Antalya is a unique destination for those who want to relax and experience culture, history and nature together.
