国内トップクラスのタケノコ生産量を誇る福岡県八女市。山間部を訪れると、昔ながらの方法でタケノコを収穫する方々に遭遇します。日本人は自然と共に生きることを重んじ、山をただの資源として扱うのではなく、
自然に対する敬意と感謝の気持ちを持ち、密接な関係を築いていました。
取材に協力してくれた小川夫妻は、市政にも関わりながら長年農業に関わってきた方々です。
自分たちならではの無理をしない山との関わり方について、独自の観点を教えていただきました。

タケノコは地下に成長し、若い芽の時に掘り起こされます。皮は硬く、内部は柔らかくて淡い色をしています。
タケノコ掘りは林業の一環として行われることがあり、特に竹林の管理や竹の利用が盛んな地域では、タケノコ掘りは重要な作業のひとつです。
竹が過密にならないように間引きすることで、竹の生育をコントロールし、竹林が他の植生を侵食しないよう管理します。

タケノコは農業や林業の中で利益性が高い作物とされています。
竹は地下茎で自然に繁殖するため、新たに植える必要がありません。
一度竹林を整備すれば、毎年タケノコを収穫でき高い収益を上げることができます。

Yame City in Fukuoka Prefecture is one of Japan’s top producers of bamboo shoots. If you visit the mountainous areas, you’ll encounter people harvesting bamboo shoots using traditional methods. Japanese people have always valued living in harmony with nature. They don’t see the mountains simply as a resource to be exploited. Instead, they have a deep respect and gratitude for nature, fostering a close relationship with it.

The Ogawas, a couple who kindly agreed to be interviewed for this video, have been involved in agriculture for many years, while also participating in local government. They shared with us their unique perspective on how they interact with the mountains in a sustainable way, without pushing themselves too far.

Bamboo shoots grow underground and are dug up when they are young sprouts. They have a tough outer skin, but the inside is soft and pale in color.

Harvesting bamboo shoots is sometimes part of forestry work. It’s especially important in areas where bamboo forests are actively managed or where bamboo is used extensively. By selectively removing some of the shoots, the growth of the bamboo is controlled, preventing the bamboo forest from taking over and harming other plants.

Bamboo shoots are considered a highly profitable crop in both agriculture and forestry. Bamboo naturally spreads through underground stems, so there’s no need to replant it. Once a bamboo forest is established, it can yield bamboo shoots every year, generating significant profits.
