  1. Appreciate your review as usual Andrew. Pretty awesome!!! So we arrive in Haneda on September 14th…a Saturday @1:10PM. The plan is to take the Shinkansen from Shinagawa to Kyoto that same day. We'd like to travel in the green car. Do you think i can just wait until we get there to book tickets or book in advance? If i wait i run the chance of not getting a seat vs booking in advance and missing my train because my flight arrived late or i got held up in immigration. Any thoughts on this??

  2. One time you should book in advance however is if you want to reserve a panoramic seats at the front (or rear) of the train such as on Hida/Shinano. Also another small con about Smartex is it doesn't include any connecting local / rapid trains in major urban areas.
If you want to connect from a Limited Express/Shinkansen onto a local train outside of an urban area then tick "buy super limited express ticket only" box when it shows up, and buy the base ticket that covers all segments. This is cheaper.
Now you can also book (JR) trains on Navitime, tho it looks like it adds on admin fees but makes it easy to buy connecting trains.
