JAPAN VIRTUAL WALK 7: ASAKUSA NAKAMISE SHOPPING STREET (浅草仲見世通り)
Asakusa Nakamise Shopping Street is probably the most famous tourist shopping street in Japan, one of Tokyo’s most visited attractions too. Nearly every shop flanking the 250 metre pathway caters to travellers, which makes the street kind of touristy, but that’s also where the fun is. You don’t have to worry about language issues when buying here. There’s a huge selection of souvenirs, at prices that are still quite reasonable. There’s also all sorts of tradition pastries and snacks to try, as well as modern ones.
I always visit whenever I’m in Tokyo. In recent years, I always buy figurines from a certain toy shop there whenever I visit too.
By the way, the Nakamise Shopping Street is great after dark too. All the shops would be closed, but the illuminated landmarks and colourful shutters transform the area into an architectural and photography wonderland. Take a look at some of my older photos at this URL:
