👋🏼 Hello! Today, Jiji goes to Otaru Snow Light Path Festival!

After having delicious sushi for dinner, we didn’t realize how heavy the snow was outside. We had to stop by a kombini to get an umbrella ☂️ We then walked to the old Temiya Line railway tracks to check out the Otaru Snow Light Path Festival and then headed towards the Otaru Canal. We also came across an open-air performance of a group singing Studio Ghibli Spirited Away music during our walk. You can check it out on this video: https://youtu.be/fidWP0rAock

📍 OTARU SNOW LIGHT PATH FESTIVAL (Otaru Yuki Akari no Michi 小樽雪あかりの路) is one of the most famous events in Otaru that takes place every year around February, around the same time as Sapporo Snow Festival. It is a magical celebration of winter lights and snow sculptures. The festival typically lasts for about one week, and during this time, the city is beautifully illuminated with thousands of small snow lanterns and light displays.

The festival began in 1999 as a way to attract tourists to Otaru during the winter months and has since become one of the city’s most popular events. The main attractions of the festival include the snow-covered streets lined with lanterns made from ice and snow, creating a serene and enchanting atmosphere.

One of the highlights of the festival is the Otaru Canal, which is adorned with countless snow lanterns and illuminated with various lights, creating a picturesque scene that attracts visitors from all over Japan and around the world. Visitors can stroll along the canal, take photographs, and enjoy the romantic ambiance.

In addition to the canal, there are several other locations throughout Otaru where visitors can experience the beauty of the Snow Light Path Festival, including the former Temiya Line railway tracks, which are also decorated with lanterns and light displays.

Overall, the Otaru Snow Light Path Festival offers a unique opportunity to experience the beauty of winter in Hokkaido and immerse oneself in the charm of this historic port city illuminated by the soft glow of snow lanterns and lights.
