Kouri Island is a small island surrounded by emerald green waters in the northern part of Okinawa’s main island. 2005 saw the opening of the Kouri Ohashi Bridge between the island and neighboring Yagaji Island, making it a remote island accessible by car from the main island. Crossing the bridge allows visitors to drive through the crystal clear waters that Okinawans rave about, and the spectacular scenery has made the island a popular destination for many tourists.

There is a beach right at the entrance to the island, and snorkelers can look into the coral reefs and see vivid tropical fish not far from the shore. In addition to swimming in one of the most beautiful beaches on the island, Kouri Island offers beautiful sunsets at dusk and a star-filled sky at night.

On the island, there are old houses and sugarcane fields, and the original landscape of Okinawa still remains. Rental bicycles are a popular way to take a leisurely stroll through the tranquil nature of the island. There are also restaurants and lodging facilities, making it possible to stay for a whole day or even for a longer period of time.

In 2013, the Kouri Ocean Tower also opened. In addition to an observatory with a spectacular view, it also has a shell museum where visitors can see more than 10,000 shells collected from all over the world, and a restaurant.

There is an old tradition that Kouri Island is the “Island of Love” or “Island of God. This is because the island is said to be an Okinawan version of “Adam and Eve,” and the origin of the word “Kourijima” is said to be “Koijima,” or “love island. This is why the island is visited by couples from all over Japan.
