Ryoan-ji Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is located in Ukyo-ku, about 40 minutes by train from Kyoto Station.
The temple was built in 1450 by Hosokawa Katsumoto, a member of the Myoshinji school of the Rinzai sect of Zen Buddhism.
The “stone garden” in front of the hojo is world-famous, and in the fall, the maple tree behind the karesansui (dry landscape garden) turn beautiful red.

In the Kyoyouchi Pond Garden on the south side of the temple grounds, the autumn leaves also turn the grounds vermilion.
