The Manshuin Temple is located in Sakyo-ward, Kyoto City, and is about an hour by train and bus from Kyoto Station. Its origin is traced back to a temple built by the Buddhist monk Saicho on Mt. Hiei in the 8th century. Manshuin Temple is one of the five major temples of the Tendai sect, as well as Shoren-in, Sanzen-in, Myoho-in, and Bishamon-do. It is one of the most popular places for viewing the autumn leaves in the northern part of Kyoto, especially near the Chokushimon Gate.
