Ceuta is an autonomous city in the Kingdom of Spain located on the northwest coast of Morocco. Covering an area of 18.5 km2, it has just under 85,000 inhabitants. Ceuta, like its neighbor Melilla to the east, is a Spanish enclave in Moroccan territory. Survivors of the Spanish colonial empire, they represent the only land border still existing between Europe and Africa.

Located at the Mediterranean sea, facing the Iberian Peninsula, Ceuta is a few kilometers from the Andalusian coast. This strategic location has made it one of the major routes for migration to Europe. Moreover, the city has come back to the forefront recently due to the new migration crisis that has exploded in the region, rekindling diplomatic tensions between Morocco and Spain.

But then what do we really know about Ceuta? What is the history of this city and how did this Moroccan territory become a Spanish possession? This is the story of this piece of Spain on African soil.

  5. This is not a colonial territory, is a historical part of Spain, it was conquered by the portuguese en XV century and later, after the union of Spain and Portugal over 80 years, people of Ceuta decided by a referendum to stay with the Spanish Crown, so the city received by the King the title of ever noble, loyal and very fatihful city of Ceuta. So when the kingdom of Maroc was created Ceuta was a part of Spain yet, not a colonial territory. If you want to talk about a territory stolen and settled as a colony, talk about Gibraltar, the real colonial shame in the area.
