Japan, another place you may need to visit, Shikoku Island.
The smallest of Japan’s four main islands, Shikoku, is blessed with a stunning mountainous interior, long coastal roads, and beautiful temples. Despite its attractions, it is the least visited, making it very easy to get off the beaten track. Like Hokkaido and Kyushu, the best way to explore is by rental car, especially convenient for Australians and Kiwis accustomed to driving on the left with steering on the right. Japanese road rules are also very similar to ours, except for roundabouts, which are rare. JR Passes can also be used, and the Shikoku rail pass, available in conjunction with other passes, provides access to cute and colorfully designed tourist trains, such as the Anpanman Train, exclusive to Shikoku. However, we recommend renting a car with a GPS system; simply input your accommodation’s phone number into the GPS, and follow the instructions spoken in English.
Shikoku is renowned for its 88-temple pilgrimage. The Buddhist monk Kukai, born and raised in Kagawa, is credited with founding the Shikoku Pilgrimage of eighty-eight temples after visiting China to learn about esoteric Buddhism. The area’s heavy forests and deep valleys are also famous for wild game and fresh local produce, offering a delightful meal to conclude the day. Among the various pilgrimage experiences in Japan, the 88 Sacred Sites of the Shikoku pilgrimage stand at the center.
The region boasts a spectrum of unique traditional foods crafted from abundant produce from both land and sea. Sanuki Udon, made with wheat noodles and a soup stock from soy sauce and seafood, is a local favorite. Tai meshi involves cooking rice with a whole sea bream.
With stunningly beautiful landscapes and a rural environment, there are still numerous cultural sights to explore. The Seto Inland Sea region is absolutely beautiful and enjoys a pleasant climate year-round. Prepare for a pleasant shock as everything is affordable, people are friendly, it’s less crowded, and safety is paramount. – Sakura TV comment about Shikoku
