Tim Keeley is professor of Cross-Cultural Management at Kyushu Sangyo University in Fukuoka, Japan. Here he compares structural features of ten languages of Asia.

Why these particular 10 languages from Asia? Because they are the ones I know the best among languages in Asia.

This lecture was recorded at the Polyglot Gathering in Berlin 2015 (http://www.polyglotberlin.com). The official sponsor of this conference was http://www.italki.com .

  1. Thank you Tim! An awesome review of these languages! I have started since some time with the easy ones, malay and indonesian, as the tonal ones seem and sound seriously scary for now! Looking forward to more vids from you!

  3. Hello Mr. Keeley, I'm an Italian guy who would love to learn Asian language, in particular Mandarin and Japanese, before visiting there. Any simple advice? Any special trick?

  4. Hi Tim,

  5. Tim you’re truly unique and lived life to the fullest. Very motivational presentation. In the how to become a hyperglot presentation you mentioned learning multiple languages at the same time is possible but you need time. I saw you dedicated 4-5 hours daily for 5-6 months to learn Greek. If a person is learning (not maintaining) 2-3 languages simultaneously, what do you recommend in this scenario? 30 min, 1hr etc per language? Or like Lydia stated that it’s better to focus on one for two years until B2.

  6. Im Portuguese and currently am trying to perfect my english in order to take a CELTA so I can teach in Japan. You are an inspiring persona for me without a doubt. I'll definetly check your papers on language diversity and learning!

  7. This is awesome. I lived in China for a short year and learnt some mandarin, now that I'm back home – I don't know how to keep studying. Any tips?

  8. I also found you from Wouter’s channel. It’s amazing to see what 66 years of studying languages can do. Which came first, the love of languages or the travel? Or did you learn the languages because you traveled and naturally learned as you went? Peace from Taiwan! English teacher learning Chinese. -Alex

  9. i watch your video with dutch guy your knowledge is great and beautiful and impressive also. walter kinda be honest sucks in most of languages he spoke.but your japanese and chinese are impressive i am a japanese tutor and i saw your sentence were really will grammared.i saw you was trying to form a conversation with him in japanese .I would love to ask you if you please HOW did you learn japanese and any advise you could give to me for HELPING my students?.すみませんどこであなたは日本語を勉強しました

  10. So I grew up around spanish but predominantly spoke English so I lost almost all of the spanish. Any tips on how I could grasp the language better?

  11. Hello Mr. Tim, what is your opinion of people who learn languages non academically? Would learning linguistics help learning a language? I'm asking because I am in the process of teaching myself Tagalog.

  12. Hey Tim, i found you through YouTube's algorithm, and i love languages, i speak Macedonian, English, and my mothers tongue Montenegran(which means i can speak and understand fully Serbian and Bosnian ) i want to work something connected with languages and with it learn even more languages, thank you so much for the vids. You are an inspiration!

  13. Tim i really want to go to japan. But i'm a bit scared. Is work at japan that hard ? In the globality is it a great country to live as a foreigner ? I'm french so i don't know if our cultur could match. Love your video btw thanks 🙂

  14. Do you know laoshu50500 YouTube channel he knows 50+ aswell, but what steps do you go about learning a language in order like, pronouns , adverbs ,preposition stuff like that any tips in terms of structure?

  15. Hi. I am learning Spanish. So, I stumbled upon a Video by Waltour speaking with you in a lot of languages. I think you are a better speaker of the languages you know than him. Multilingual videos would be very entertaining.

  16. It seems like there was a mistake when the slide was prepared for youtube at 33:28 although the slide in the presentation looks like it is correct. I was following along with the fantastic presentation and it caught me off guard!

  17. Hello, Mr. Keeley 🙂 I would like to know if you have any podcasts or other platforms where you share your life experiences, knowledge of language, or anything else you have to share. You must have a lot of experience in many aspects of life as you have traveled so much, learned so much, and gone through many things I'm sure. If not, then thank you very much for sharing part of that here on YouTube; I greatly appreciate it 🙂

  18. I speak 5 and a 1/2 languages because I don’t consider myself fluent at mandarin I just wanted to ask, does it get harder to learn a language as you age? Thank you and you’ve been a great inspiration.

  19. Hi, do you have any children? I'm asking because I wonder what languages they would learn. I myself am 28 years old now and I have a daughter of 1.5 years. It looks like she will grow up with 4 languages: my native language, her mother's native language, the language I speak to her mother, and the language of the country we are in.

I stick to speaking one language to her only and when she gets fluent I want to introduce one more language. I'm looking forward to it.:)

I'm also asking about the children because you went to so many different countries (it might be difficult to always make it work out with the child's mother) and whether you'd have time to dedicate it to learning.

  20. Tim, do you think your continuous language learning has prevented or rather mitigated cognitive decline related to aging. You still seem to be pretty cognizant even in your 60s. Also, do you think your language learning has improved any other aspects of your cognition, besides your linguistic abilities obviously. Thanks

  21. Hey Tim have you ever visited New Zealand? If so, I wonder if you ever thought of learning the native language Māori? It wouldn’t take you long to learn considering you’ve learnt all these, much more, difficult languages!

  22. Professor Tim.
Thank you for uploading a wonderful script. Simply great.
    You are special. Respect!
Well, you did a fantastic job in Fukuoka as a host last year.
I still miss polyglot conference in Fukuoka. It was like a dream to me.
    Thanks again.
    Simon Park. Korea

  23. hello. a questions. how often do you review the languages you know so you do not forget them? also when you were studying abroad did you also work? i imagine traveling and going to school would drain your money quick, no? you are very inspiring to me. Thankyou for passing some of your knowledge to me

  24. If you learn English, Mandarin, and Spanish, you can speak with 1/3 the planet and spread out over a LARGE area.

    Learn 10 or learn 3.

All the respect in the world to this man. To learn 10 Asian languages for a westerner is extremely impressive. That’s so hard.
