  1. i feel chinese food was better in the 90s or early 2000s wen they had the big resturants nowadays the stuff seems imitiation unles u know good spots

  2. One thing I’ve been saying this last year is that I think the next big dining thing is going to be the rise of the Chinese “Bistro” where it would be normal to pay $25-35 per dish. And the food is at the level you expect for that price.

  3. As a South Asian American, a similar thing happened in Indian food across America. Everyone is just eating the standard northern Indian dishes (ie: Chicken tikka Masala/Butter chicken) but never get a chance to try the different regional cuisines across the various countries. Also, the southern dishes that are traditionally never explored such as the beef & seafood forwarded dishes from Kerala, Goa, Bangalore, etc.

  4. As a Chinese-American author, I kind of see what he's talking about.

Some white people don't like my book so might leave lower reviews. One review of my book even had the comment "I don't know what nationality the author is, but…"

Also, people tend to leave reviews or ratings if they had a strong reaction to something. And that usually tends to be negative.

If you look at Yelp reviews, like any other reviews, star ratings can be all over the place.

Another factor to consider is your traditional Asian immigrant isn't going to be leaving Yelp reviews. It's entirely possible that it's mostly non-Asians who are leaving Yelp reviews.

One of my favorite Chinese restaurants in LA closed down, but before it did I did read some Yelp reviews complaining about service.

There are some things he's right about but there are also some things he's wrong about. No culture is necessarily perfect.

  5. Ya judge people and you look silly, I grew up in a smaller city in Missouri that was blessed with higher than average Chinese and Vietnamese population and we had some real authentic joints. I saw old white people order the duck order the cabbage and intestines hot pot etc etc .. my point is some people really bout that life… as a side note I haven’t been back in the US in a long time. We got Hai Di Lao there now?!? Lesssgo

  6. Not dropping Umar's name in a discussion about culture and misperception…Well done bruthaz!

  7. I think a part of it, is that it used to be that the best food for the best price that's authentic is the hole in the wall type restaurants that haven't been gentrified or overly franchised. And that's just the case for Asian food.

But as with all lines of thinking, it veered off in the wrong direction

  8. I understand the jokes behind cheap bad service good Chinese food and they are funny, but I totally agree with yall that ABCs are taking on an outdated mindset meanwhile China has already gone way past. The 3.5 star rule should really only apply to American Chinese style restaurants and specific styles of immigrant Cantonese restaurants, because that's where the image even came from. I don't understand why people are trying to apply this rule to recent restaurant businesses that are literally from China like Haidilao, etc. Like do people realize that nice/fancy restaurants literally exist in China??

What's crazy is, Chinese food is actually hugely regional and diverse. But yet even fellow ABCs are reducing it down to "3.5 star ruled" Chinese food.

  9. Most people on Yelp rate on service… I'll eat at the shittiest service Chinese restaurant if it's fire!

  10. From my personal experience with Vietnamese food, I can honestly say the hole in the wall Viet restaurant that is not over charging and not over selling with aesthetic restaurant does actually taste better.

  11. Lol nobody talking about the fact that this man said Freddie Wong is pretty wrong

  12. Here in Toronto, Canada 🇨🇦, I won't go to a Chinese restaurant without my mom or brother – who are both fluent. I am not ("jo-sing") I'm a CBC.
Price is not a determining factor for the most part if the food is good or bad. If you see lines of Asians lining out the door, it's Usually a good sign. But beware, some are there just because it's cheap and the quality matches it. Yuk 🤢

Service is usually pretty meh at best 😑 but I'll go for the quality of the food. I can hardly remember when we didn't have to flag someone down to fill our tea pot when our lid was flipped.
I'll put up with sub par service in a Chinese restaurant if the food is great.
I will NOT for regular, Canadian/North American restaurants. – – Double standard? Maybe, but true

  13. Listen man I'm Korean New Yorker born and raised. I hate that rude asf Chinese servers. If I'm going into your restaurant I don't want to be treated like an asshole or like I'm doing you a favor.

  14. Thank you for this. I don't think the 3.5 stars think is true for the SF Bay Area. I have been expanding my Chinese restaurant palate these last few years and there's definitely interesting stuff out there to be discovered.

  15. I live in Garden Grove. The 3.5 rule applies here all the best places are 3.5 and the 1 star reviews are people complaining about service.

  16. I will say that he definitely forgot to mention it matters where you live. If you live in a small suburban area that's almost completely white (like I do), you don't want the 5 stars or 4 stars. If you do that here you get PF Changs or Nagoya 😂

  17. Yall talking about people’s firmware being out of date when yall installed the wrong operating system. If you’re Asian American you know getting that right price value is part of the experience of eating out. If you know you’re being overcharged it won’t taste right regardless.

  18. Honestly I think it really is accurate. Americans really want service but if you want real authentic food without the high price tag of the authentic food you’re looking at 3.5 – 4
