Magaome-Juku (馬籠宿) is one of 69 post towns that spanned the mountains between Kyoto and Tokyo during the era of the Shoguns. The trail that was established to connect them all was named the Nakasendo Road, and it provided the Emperor the ability to consolidate his power throughout Japan. Today, the 69 original towns are in varying states of existence, with some being fully restored to their original Edo-period splendor, while others await reconstruction. Magome-Juku is one of the best-preserved and reconstructed examples of the era, and it is one of the most popular gateways to the Nakasendo Trail, beginning an 8KM walk between itself and Tsumago-Juku.
