Tokyo at night is a whole new side of Japan! Arguably the best place in Tokyo to see at nighttime is Shinjuku, and this awesome district has a lot of options for travellers to check out. Before we even explored Shinjuku district though, our experience started at Shinjuku Station. This is the busiest train station in all of Tokyo, and it is a pretty cool place to watch people go about their daily life as you go about yours.
From Shinjuku Station we walked to Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building to start our night off with some gorgeous views of Tokyo’s skyline at night. This city is so sprawling and incredibly built, so we were eager to see the skyline at night when it’s all lit up. The best part of this tourist attraction is that it’s free!
One of our favourite things about this night is that everything was within walking distance. From the Tokyo Metropolitan Government building we were able to walk to the Kabukicho District which is the epicentre of the entertainment part of Shinjuku. The amount of signage and lights in Kabukicho was amazing! We were totally floored by how beautiful a busy neighbourhood can be just by the signage and use of colours. Kabukicho has lots of shopping and all sort of places to visit to fit the interest of each visitor, but we were happy just to walk around and take it all in.
There are lots of restaurants to choose from in Shinjuku – the hard part is choosing which one you want and finding one with some space (at least on a Friday night). We managed to find a hole in the wall ramen shop that was not a bad spot for a quick late night bite to eat.
Our favourite part of the night was when we headed to Golden Gai. This is a part of Tokyo that feels so different from the rest of the city. Tiny winding alleys lined with the smallest bars we have ever seen, Golden Gai is truly one of a kind. Deciding which bar to go into was really hard! Some bars have rules posted on their doors including cover charges or “regulars only,” and some of them have signs saying they are foreigner friendly. We found one that suited us and had a tiny bit of space for us to squeeze in, and we loved it! It’s impossible not to chat with other visitors because of the quaintness of the room, which we loved. If you are looking for a unique night out in Tokyo, you HAVE to check out Golden Gia!

Hey there! We are Nicole and Mico and in March 2021, we quit our jobs, sold our belongings, and began traveling the world! We never thought we’d be making travel vlogs on YouTube, but after realizing that we had a unique opportunity to share our adventure and make the world feel more familiar and inviting to anyone watching, we took the leap and picked up the camera! We hope our videos show how wonderful, delicious, and friendly the world can be.

Red Light District, lol? Must have a different meaning in Canada. Love your videos!
Going to Japan with our daughter and I'm wondering how to navigate this part of Japan because we do wanna go out at night. What time did the nightlife get started? Figure maybe we can just start early and end early if we have to.
Love your videos. And your pace. Feel like it matches mine and my wife's so well be able to copy a lot 😅
Thanks for sharing your experience – your videos really resonate with me.

Golden Gai is now full of foreigners, not authentic anymore.
Enjoy your Tokyo journey.
Thank you for this video. I will be in Tokyo 2x in 2024 for 12 hour layovers and Shinjuku is one of my stops
The man standing wearing something like a kimono is “Takuhatsu.''
