Norikura Kogen, nestled in the Northern Japan Alps in Nagano Prefecture, is a place of breathtaking natural beauty. With its stunning landscapes, outdoor activities, and scenic vistas, it has become a beloved destination for travelers. Located just a short 30-minute drive from Kamikochi car park or a 3 hours drive from Nagoya, Norikura Kogen’s elevated plateau, ranging from 1,200 to 1,800 meters above sea level, offers a unique perspective on the region.

There are many attractions in Norikura Kogens. The following are what I feel is the 3 most scenic ones. The Great Maple of Norikura, Maimenoike Pond and Zengoro Falls

The once-a-year, rare and beautiful sight of the Great Maple of Norikura is a must visit destination. We are extremely lucky and excited to be there just in time when the red Maple leaves is in full bloom. In October, the vibrant red leaves of the maple tree bloom for just a week before gracefully falling. Surrounded by lush vegetation and the majestic mountain ranges, this sight is truly a spectacle to behold.

Maimenoike pond, among the many scenic ponds in Norikura Kogen, stands out with its colorful forest backdrop and breathtaking mountain views. We parked our car near the Azalea Garden, a mere 500 meters away from the Great Maple tree. From there, we embarked on a scenic hill hike along a gentle trail, surrounded by vibrant autumn hues, until we reached the captivating Maimenoike pond.

Within hiking distance from the Norikura Visitor Center, we discovered three stunning waterfalls. Zengoro Falls, the most accessible and visually striking, was just a 700-meter walk from the center. Along the way, we strolled through a forest filled with beautiful yellow autumn leaves, as if stepping into a picture-perfect scene from a fairytale. After a 20-minute walk, we were greeted by the breathtaking sight of the waterfall, adorned with the natural colors of autumn.

Norikura Kogen is truly a hidden gem in the Nagano Prefecture, one that I am eager to revisit in the future. Its easy accessibility, lack of crowds, and unspoiled beauty make it a place of serene tranquility.
