Today, we’re going to explore the lives of the black Moroccans: the Gnawa people.
The Gnawa are an incredibly small group of people in Morocco, with only a few thousand living in a small village in the Sahara called Khemliya.
The Gnawa came to Morocco hundreds of years ago as slaves from West African countries such as Ghana. Over time, they developed their own culture, including their own distinct music, rituals, and even food such as Berber pizza.
I met Ahmed, my guide in the video, when I randomly appeared in the village. Without hesitation, he took in me to explore the Gnawa culture…

In Morocco, we do not categorize or separate individuals based on their skin color or ethnic descent. We don't use terms such as black, white, African-American, Latino, Asian, Middle Eastern, and so on.
