Japan’s Shinkansen, which translates to bullet trains, is a high speed railway system. It was built to connect Tokyo with the outlying areas of the country. The N700 series of Shinkansen have a maximum speed of 186mph, can get up to 170mph in three minutes, and also has tilting capability up to one degree. When traveling east to west, as in going from Tokyo to Kyoto, it’s best to reserve a seat on the right side of the train as this will afford a view of Mt. Fuji should it actually appear out of the clouds. No, there is no bitterness in my typing! Food carts offering snacks and drinks are pushed through the aisles, however, feel free to bring your own snacks or a bento box.
