Spent a windy morning walking around Fukuoka Castle Tower Ruins in Maizuru Park.
The Fukuoka Castle Tower Ruins are a testament to the city’s storied past, standing amidst the urban sprawl in Maizuru Park. Originally one of Kyushu’s largest castles, it was built in the early 17th century by Nagamasa Kuroda, a feudal lord rewarded for his battle prowess. The castle, once boasting 47 turrets, was largely demolished during Japan’s Meiji Restoration as it represented the feudal era the country sought to move past. Now, only a single turret and the main gate stand, serving as a scenic vantage point over Fukuoka and a historic site that continues to share its over 400-year-old narrative with visitors and future generations.
