Let’s explore the world through Google Street View.

Today we are visiting Istanbul Turkey. Wow wow wow. What a place! Amazing history at the grandest of scales. It has to be easily in the top 10 cities I have seen on this world tour. Unbelievable streets and bazaars full of shopping and dining. Those epic old mosques are supremely impressive structures. And Hagia Sophia is such a gem. An amazing skyline too thats clearly growing. Love it! I will definitely visit some day.

  1. Great vid Dan. Totally with you that one video doesn't do Istanbul justice. May I suggest Yogyakarta or historic Malacca for a future tour?
    Cheers

  2. When he was just 12 years old Mehmed II asked his father Murad II to reclaim the throne, but Murad II refused. Angry at his father, who had long since retired to a contemplative life in southwestern Anatolia, Mehmed II wrote, "If you are the sultan, come and lead your armies. If I am the sultan I hereby order you to come and lead my armies." It was only after receiving this letter that Murad II led the Ottoman army and won the Battle of Varna in 1444.

  3. How amazing is that Mehmed II was only 21 years old when he conquered the city of Constantinople? There is a quote from Prophet Muhammad in the Hadith that says “You will conquer Constantinople. The best commander is its commander and the best army is its army."

  4. 4:00 The legend has it that when Emperor Justinian, the man who commissioned Hagia Sophia, entered the basilica when it was finished, fell down on his knees and exclaimed: Solomon, I hath outdone thee!

  5. Much later legend says, that when the Turks took over the city and tried to replace the Cross at the top of the dome with the Crescent Moon, the building came alive and shook it off three times. Constantinople/Istanbul is prone to earthquakes, since it lies in the middle of two fault lines. Draw your own conclusions.

  6. I know I have been asking you a lot but please do Beirut, Lebanon it's a wonderful city cradled by sea and mountain with Churches and Mosques side by side.

  7. How can an American live and work in Istanbul/Turkey?! I visited twice already and my soul is so connected to Istanbul…
