I discovered Japan’s oldest cable car, the Ikoma mountain line. It goes up Mount Ikoma, between Osaka and Nara, and leads to a totally hidden and mysterious – but still open and fairly extensive – amusement park. It’s called Ikoma-Sanjo (“Ikoma mountaintop”). I have lived in Osaka, next door, for many years, but I can’t recall anyone ever mentioning this to me. So, I went to check out this secret wonder for myself. And to be honest, I’m not really a theme park-going kind of guy, but I had a ball!

  1. There was something surreal about all that, Jeremy, and I'm glad you took me along. Everything seemed so clean and spare. That made the amusement of the park feel ominous. It was the lack of noisy kids, I guess. Thanks for taking us so deeply into the mysterious Orient. I sent you a note asking if you had ever been on the hanging-from-above monorail I caught a glimpse of on youtube. It looked like public transportation. I've been watching your adventures for years now, ever since you got off Amtrak in Montana. –charlie, sacramento CA

  2. That felt like a dreamscape. And given the topsy-turvy events in Washington over the last years, that little "White House" seems emblematic somehow! As a kid, I enjoyed the Casa Loca, similar park attraction (Google "A Tilted House In The Bronx Captures Teenager's Interest"). Thanks again for a fantastic peek into Japanese culture; no wonder they invented anime!

  3. That was cool! Definitely think you should check out the other train lines. Thanks!😊

  4. What is the song that keeps playing from the beginning? I used to hear it a lot growing up in Hawaii. Something something musume????

  5. Thank you so much for taking us along on this journey. This was such a cool experience. This has PrimeTime Travelers written all over it. So surreal. That White House was so interesting. A fun house but with the list of US Presidents. So weird.

  6. I love watching you, ,, for more reasons than one, lol. You have great videos too! I would love to meet you.

  7. Hi Jeremy, I loved this video! …quirky and eerily fun. The strange combination of quietness in an amusement park was just right in a retro kind of way. Loved the old music.. How do you find these cool places? And yes, I for one would like to see other cable car videos.

  8. Where do you buy Diet Coke in Japan? I've never seen it in vending machines (on YT) or in stores. I cannot live without it.

  9. for some reason youtube wanted me to see this video. glad i did. reminded me of tibidabo amusement park in Barcelona. might have to give this place a look next time in japan.

  10. Whoa! Thank you for the tour. I visited this amusement park in September of 2005 during a month long trip to visit as many of the Japanese amusement parks as I could. This was one of the final parks we visited. It looks so different now, yet I can tell that some stuff remained unchanged. There used to be three unique roller coasters there. I returned to Japan in 2019 and didn't visit as I knew the coasters had been removed. I do plan on returning to Japan next year and maybe I will make it back on top of that mountain to see how things changed for myself. Thanks for the video. This brought back a lot of memories.

  11. Thank you so much for sharing all of this. I come from Taiwan and will pursue my master degree in Nara!
