I arrived in Osaka following a brilliant few days in Toyko, eager to continue my adventure through Japan.

Having seen just how popular Osaka Castle is with the tourists, I instead headed down to check out Dotobori market in search of the legendary local dishes of octopus balls (Takoyaki) and Okomomiyaki.

Within minutes of exiting the subway at Namba outside of Takashimaya mall, I entered the market and found the first of these two delicacies… and it wasn’t long before I also had the opportunity to try the octopus balls from Takoyaki Wanaka Dotonbori with a rather nice beer alongside them.

As I continued to explore the market and indulge in a further couple of beers, I found the third thing on my hitlist in the form of a ‘Black Boss’ from a Suntory vending machine (according to the slogan, the boss of all bosses, since 1992).

Suitably energised, I headed towards the J-Ship Namba Hostel where I was staying in my capsule room – but there was still time for ‘one for the road’.

I immediately realised that this local bar wasn’t going to let me go after only one beer, so I settled in and ordered successive large Asahi beers as the Japanese patrons welcomed me to drink with them (and try their steaming bowls of pork trotters – which I politely declined!).

As the beer flowed, and sake followed, I headed back to the hotel where I would try out the onsen – a local thermal bath, or type of spa – where the typically stringent rules dictated that I must get naked.

After a bath in the onsen, and struggling to erase the image of a naked local businessman from my brain, I headed to my capsule to showcase its facilities before the night was over…

P.S. Given my former professional background as an investment manager, personal finance is something that I strongly believe in.

I’ll be working on a side project in the coming months to help educate people around how investments work, sharing some of the tips and tricks that I used in the City before I embarked on my adventures.

In the meantime, you can see which stocks I’m invested in, and how well (or badly) I’m doing, via the link below:

Although I’ve been a client of eToro for a number of years, and would remain so regardless of any affiliate terms, I do have an agreement with them which pays me a fee if you happen to open an account via the link (it costs you nothing extra and is very welcome towards my travels for a something that I’m using anyway).

Whether or not you have any interest in this stuff is up to you – and I wont ever promote it directly in my content. But if you do want to learn more, then you can see what I’m doing in real-time there, and it might perhaps inspire you to take control of your financial future.

(As its the serious world of finance, I’m also required to share this riveting disclaimer: eToro is a multi-asset investment platform. The value of your investments may go up or down. Your capital is at risk. Other fees apply.)
