I visited a fully renovated Kyo-machiya by Hachise, a company well-known for machiya renovations in Kyoto, during the open house last weekend. This machiya inside an alley was built in 1917 and was in pretty bad shape before renovation. It is a rental property now for about $1,200 USD per month. If you want to see the actual location and more photos you can visit its page here –

  1. I wont fall from that not steep stair when drunk 🤣🤣🤣 i will fall cause there is no bar on its right 🙂

  2. nicely done renovation!
i particularly love the flooring and the garden feature of the house.
i may be mistaken, but have you visited this house before it was renovated?

  3. The renovations have removed all the house’s original features. Now it looks like it’s newly built with just a few old beams installed for “authenticity”.

  4. Definitely lost its original Machiya charm. It looks like a modern compact house more than anything now. It badly needs a Tatami room to salvage whatever charm of its origin!

  5. In what area is this Machiya? I love Hachise’s renovations. They have so many beautiful properties! I check their site often.

Just found your YouTube page today! I love it 🙂

I used to live in Kyoto and worked at Ritsumeikan University from 2009-15. I lived in a renovated Machiya near Shijo-Omiya (中京区壬生坊城町). I would always hit my head on the door frames (I’m 6’ tall 183cm) and the winters were quite cold in the Machiya. Otherwise, I loved living there.

My wife (Japanese from Nagasaki) works for Nintendo and we live in the Seattle area now. Hopefully, in a few years we will return to Kyoto again. Your videos have inspired me to try a Machiya renovation someday in the future!

    Look forward to future videos!
