I was down in Penzance anyway, so this was the ONLY way to start the long journey home. Having used the Caledonian Sleeper a few times in the past, I was keen to see how GWR’s Night Riviera compared, and let’s just say there was no contest! Enjoy the video…

Hi, I’m Steve from Scotland. I plan, film and edit travel videos both at home and throughout the world, with all the work done myself. I try to go a bit beyond the normal tourist route, exploring less-visited places and would be honoured if you’d come along as well. But please don’t expect an expert guide, if that’s what you’re after, this is probably not the channel for you. What you WILL find here though are my 100% honest impressions of what I see along the way, albeit as a layman. And I always believe the star of any video is not me, but the places I visit. I hope this comes across and you can feel like you are there with me. Please remember to subscribe, like, comment, share, all that stuff if you enjoy my videos (or even a thumbs down if you don’t!). I make a conscious effort not to say this in the videos themselves, but it would be a massive help to the channel and open it up to bigger audiences around the world. Oh, and who’s that with me in many of the adventures? Well that must be my glamorous sidekick Alicja (who features as often as she can). Thanks for watching and enjoy the video 🙂

FAQs:
WHERE ARE YOU FROM?
I was born in Glasgow but have lived in Carnoustie, Dalgety Bay, Stonehaven, Edinburgh, Montrose, and further afield (Salamanca, Spain & Devonport, New Zealand)
WHEN DO YOU UPLOAD?
Saturdays at 10am Scottish time. Occasionally a bonus midweek video will pop up.
WHAT EQUIPMENT DO YOU USE?
I film with a GoPro11 and my iPhone12. I edit on iMovie and use epidemicsound.com for music. I also use canva.com for thumbnails etc.
WHY DON’T YOU SPEND LONGER AT DESTINATIONS?
The usual suspects I’m afraid – time and money! Hotels especially these days make my eyes water like a true Scotsman.
WHERE’S ALICJA?
Alicja will feature as often as possible, but I’m afraid she has a proper job so it can take weeks for our schedules to match up.
DO YOU PAY FOR YOUR OWN TRAVEL?
Yes I do. I’ve only ever accepted a complementary ticket as compensation for a previous problem. All my opinions are frank and honest reflections of travel as I experience it.
WHY THE ADS?
It’s my income, I can’t do this for free.
CAN I CONTACT YOU?
I used to list my email address but felt bad not having the capacity to respond to everything so took it down (and I got a LOT of spam so missed many genuine messages along the way).
HOW CAN I SUPPORT THE CHANNEL?
Watching my videos is of course support enough, but if you’d like to support further, I’ll pop links below for Paypal and Patreon. All kind donations are super-appreciated and will go 100% towards future filming trips.
DO YOU ACCEPT SPONSORSHIPS?
I don’t like to upset the flow of my videos, so I don’t even include mid-roll ads anymore (at significant loss of income to myself), so I prefer not to include sponsorships either. I’m open to a small slide at the start/end of each video, but I don’t want to get into talking about products, it’s something I don’t like as a viewer myself (especially as a viewer who pays for YouTube Premium). So it’s probably a polite no, although all of this goes out the window if you offer me something which can give me the chance to make a video for my audience that would otherwise be impossible.

I was wondering maybe the top bunk is a bit bigger
Are you OK?. Looks like you're copping the brunt of this storm.
Hi Steve. Hallo from South Africa. Just recently saw your Faroe island video. I like your style of presenting and the dry humor. Immediately subscribed to your channel. Enjoy watching all your travels to places i will never see. Keep up the good work. Regards Richard
Enjoyable to watch. I was last on the Night Riviera in 2013 and the refurbishment they have done makes it look like a complete new train. Its always fully booked so hope its safe from being withdrawn.
Luckily you didn’t meet anyone coming towards you in the hallway or whatever it called
Hope you're OK Steve ☔ 🍃
Another great video – hope you folks are safe and dry during this storm
If only the train can go on up north, both night services linked. Lol. First class tickets are a joke in this country.
So the total cost of the train journey cost you £142.50? That's one expensive train ride.
An absolute pleasure to watch your video Steve. A very cheerful and enthusiastic journey.
Just thinking before i go to bed. Stay safe up in montrose, this stormisdreadful
Looks a lovely train especially the restaurant car , and you seem to have had a more relaxed journey👍. .
have you got a power cut in montrose steve marsh?
🚂😴 Great video! Loved the cabin tour and breakfast looked yummy! 🥐☕ Can't wait for your next adventure! 👍👏
That was a brilliant video!! I’m going to watch this again with my youngest daughter when she comes over later! …. Smithy
I'm a new subscriber, really enjoyed this travel video, I've got so much to catch up with …
Great video! Nice job covering the entire experience. I love sleeper trains, and have taken many of them. The Caledonian Sleeper is easily the worst I've ever taken. I really look forward to the Night Riviera.
Footnote: between now and 10 November 2023, services on the Night Riviera are very limited due to track works.
😂😂😂😂😂😂
Really cool Steve, great video!
Thanks for the great video 📹 😊
Nice one but try also a the night train Amsterdam to Vienna.
Thanks Steve. A nice tour. One night sleeper I did was the US military train through the, as was, corridor. That was special. Stopped once and looking out I saw East German troops. All very John Le Carre.
I was in Penzance three weeks ago and the lounge was shut then
Are their any kosher breakfasts on this train
And someone find out when Hornby will make more GWR SLEEPER CARAGES LTD EDITION SOLD OUT OR 100 POUNDS EACH IF YOU FIND SOME
For me the joy of the callie sleeper is waking up in Scotland. Next time your in the Paddington first class lounge, keep walking on passed the main lounge area, you get to a much nicer old seating area with lovely chesterfield leather sofas. Great video as always. ❤
Seems to be a Great way to travel Steve, everything looked super.
Plus, a early morning stroll. Cheers.
YOoo Penzance I go there all the time
What a difference in ''nationalities'' when you leave Cornwall and end up in London. Thank god we up here do not have such filth !!
Rare British railway W. Honestly i was surprised at the quality and comfort of the furnishings and fittings. My dream is that one day there will be ultra high speed rail connecting England's South coast all the way to Edinburgh/Glasgow. It would be a great to fall asleep in Southampton and end up in glasgow!
Nice one Steve ! we’ll be sure to use this service next time we’re heading south ! 😊
Not having an en suite is definitely a drawback compared with the Caledonian if you need a wee in the night
Thanks for a great report. I really can´t understand why seat cars don´t have a t least a little reclinable seats, that would be enough to handle a night!
Thank you for sharing your trip. Nice!!☺☺
Typical sloppy indifferent service one is so used to in these islands. The lounge was closed why?. Because nobody really cares a toss. Britain is finished.
As boyice would say..typical..the only thing that works is the mouth..sorry..not boyice..the Australian boy
Great video. It was fun to watch as I have just walked down all those streets in Penzance and Paddington in the past few weeks.
A lovely video, thanks. 👍
