Bologna is the capital of the Emilia-Romagna region in Northern Italy. It is the seventh most populous city in Italy, with about 400,000 inhabitants and 150 different nationalities. Famous for its towers, churches and lengthy porticoes, Bologna has a well-preserved historical centre. Bologna it is home to the oldest university in the world.
Traces of human habitation in the area of Bologna go back to the 3rd millennium BC. The influence of Etruscan civilization reached the area in the 7th century, and it became a Roman colony and municipium with the name of Bonลnia in 196 BCE. Bologna was first occupied by the Lombards, then conquered by the Carolingian Empire. It gained its independence in 1183. Subsequently, the town began to expand rapidly and became one of the main trade centres of northern Italy. Believed to have been established in 1088, the University of Bologna is the world’s oldest university in continuous operation. It numbered Dante, Boccaccio and Petrarch among its students.
As a result of infighting the city eventually came under papal rule. This period (1506โ€“1796) has been one of severe decline, that became noticeable starting in the 17th and 18th century. Papal rule ended in 1860, when Bologna joined the Kingdom of Italy. In the last decades of the 19th century, Bologna once again thrived economically and socially.
Bologna suffered extensive damage during World War II. In the post-war years, Bologna became a thriving industrial centre as well as a major tourist destination. Bologna’s 142 hectares (350 acres) historic centre is Europe’s second largest, containing an immense wealth of important medieval, renaissance, and baroque artistic monuments.

  2. Let me be the first here to wish you had a very happy birthday. Accordingly, I doubly appreciate this wonderful video walking tour of the medieval city of Bologna. I have never been there; yet, on your video I learned so much – oldest (as named) university from 1088, the "portico "capital" of the world, and home of the tallest still standing medieval tower at 97 meters. WOW. Great views from the top of the Asinelli Tower. Your captions also add so much to the experience and value of your work. THANK YOU. Keep touring & posting these marvelous videos. These are hands down the best videos of walking tours on the internet.
