Shocking Cruise Ship Update. This surprised even me. Holland America Cruise Line announced it was selling four of it’s classic ships. That is almost 30% of it’s fleet. It makes me wonder if this is just the beginning of more cruise ships on the chopping block. #cruiseshipnews #cruisingwithdon #donsfamilyvacations #carnivalcruiseline

The Amsterdam and Rotterdam are two of our favorite cruise ships! We have also sailed on the Maasdam and loved it. HAL is changing for the worse!
Love Hal. The Amsterdam was my favorite ship. I like the smaller ships.
You do not seem to understand the pedictament the cruise lines are in. It will be a long time before they find God willing & Government permitting!
Thatβs a lot of jobs. The effect of this CovId on the global economy is terrible. Not sure we will ever recover. Makes me sad.
I say anyone at risk needs to stay home
Cruise industry is finished, sad but a fact.
Cruising as we know it before covid wonβt return to normal until a vaccine is created. Anyone who thinks otherwise may be in denial.
Don, When you last discussed the topic, you said that the cruise ships would not be sold for scrap. Yes, they are. How about admitting that you misread the signals of a collapsing industry?
We were to told the MS Volendam has been on sale for over 2 years when we were on board this year .
As a crew member we are facing toughest time now. Our company prople and our families are spending sleepless nights every day. I pray to God to save us.
Hey Don, we just booked for Oct 21 for a UK/Ireland & Wales. The TA told me sales were high for UK departures, the international bookings were flat. I guess it'll work the same way over there once the CDC get over their hatred of the cruise industry and the ships will have mainly American cruisers.
@Dpn, the issue of today is that we lack a clear cut decision on how to proceed. We need strong leadership, not people waffling between this move or that move based on popular polling. Leaders need to make an unpopular choice, then stick with it to get results. If they want to set parameters for shutdown, do it and let people live with a new normal. If they want to re-open completely, then put triple effort into the final vaccine to reduce the amount of suffering and death. Millions of people are in the hospital right now on life supporting machines around the world, waiting for the cure to come. We may have cut down the death rate with treatment, but without a cure, these folk will be dying just ever so slowly. The world needs a direction and has to follow it.
Why you pushing cruising? Come on.
Masks and a sidearm seems a lil extreme just to cruise.
Never count out the cruise lines and those who sail on them. Cruising was growing at 20% for a good reason, they provided a great product at a great price. After 911, no one flew for 6 months. A year later more people flew than ever before. The cruise lines will get their safety protocols in order and they will be safer than hotels, resorts, planes, restaurants, bars, airports etc. I am not worried about the cruise lines, I am worried about the embarkation and disembarkation ports, the flights, hotels etc. Our neighbours to the south are in complete disarray. Their departure ports are covid hot spots.
As far as the fleets go, they normally do a rotation of new ships in, refurbishments to the middle aged ships, and the oldest ships out. The older ships leave the fleet and are purchased by smaller cruise lines that do coastal/regional cruises. Carnival cruise line (not Carnival Corporation, the holding company) keeps their prices down because they keep their ships the longest. For example, the Carnival Sensation was christened in 1993!
The popular cruise lines have gravitated to larger ships because they have economies of scale and they offer more to do on the ship. Plus, just like cars and trucks, the efficiencies are much improved in new ships, i.e. running on LNG, cleaner exhaust, better recycling, etc. One of the comments below was cruise lines are getting away from longer cruises. Not true. Most cruise lines offer 20+ days on many cruises. Ships like the Pacific Princess at 670 pax do the world cruises as do many cruise lines. If people want to go on smaller ships they may have to gravitate to the more expensive cruise lines like Crystal, Regent, SilverSea, Ponant, Seabourn, Oceania, Azamara or Viking.
Damn! That's a lot of ships.
There isn't one cruise line that will need the pre-covid capacities. Cruising will become less enticing to a lot of what you would call avid cruisers. Look, our lives have changed drastically thanks to Covid. So why on earth would anyone think that cruise ships will magically be immune? Answer is that they won't be. Wringing one's hands over it is nonsensical. The cruise industry, like many others, will need to adjust. How they do that is anyone's guess. I wish them well. There are much higher needs than cruising. And, may I add, I hope none of them get American aid as most are registered outside the US.
Same thing here in the states as far as schools…I work at a school as an assistant so I don't know how long I will have a job for. I don't know what the parents that cannot work from home are going to do…I mean if they have to put their kids in daycare, they might as well be in school. Hard times we are living in right now..and my husband just lost his job…so even if the cruise lines opened up soon we could not even afford to go on a vacation. Then there is medical insurance problem when you are not working here…Hang in there Don!
Oh no, I love smaller ships. The Amsterdam was my favorite ship in Holland America
There should not be any cruises until next year. The virus is getting much worse, especially in my country the United States because we have such a idiot president.
Don I googled cruise ships for sale a couple weeks ago and found a broker marketing two Radiance Class ships one of which was Radiance I reckon by the interior pics. We sailed on her not so long ago.
My husband and I have been thinking about going on another cruise. When all of this virus stuff happened and then all of the mixed messages from cruise lines, we decided that we won't pay for a cruise since there are too many unknowns. We wanted to do the Alaskan cruise. But, now we will go in a couple of years.
Are you all moved in and settling in your new place?
Cruising is dead until a vaccine.
It's a scary world. So sad to see the way the world is now
I know a lot of cruisers are very upset cause cruising is kind of dangerous thing to do with covid 19. Funny I am more concerned with 140,000+ souls have been lost on American soil. I wish it was normal too, wishful thinking without the work, and people staying home, when they are not working, going to the store, or pharmacy. We Americans expect a lot from our military, this battle to destroy covid 19 is all of Americans fight. We have to get serious with this virus. So I am very sorry about your cruise plans. We have children going back to school any guesses what that will do to our back to normal plans. Our plans should be to stop giving covid 19 a place to grow. Wear a mask, stay at home, unless you still fortunate to still have a job.
I want to join the cruise ship .please help me for this.
Welcome to my life. No job after 41 years. Not my fault.
The inability to cruise is not "devastating". The deaths of hundreds of thousands of people are devastating. You said you know people who will never open their businesses again, well I know people who will never breath again. You are woefully misguided and your agenda is showing.
This should not be shocking whatsover. These sales were on the blocks even before COVID-19. HAL has been publicly clear since 2018 that these two classes of ships were not in their future … their economics were horrible in terms pax-to-crew ratios and the lower on-board spends of the pax — short and longer voyages. This abandonment of these classes was openly noted by the Captain during a mariners lunch on our Transatlantic crossing in the Spring of 2018.
This is typical of short term management. Max cap, cheapest crews, priced to fill mega ships with lower cost and higher margin per customer. It's like they have forgotten that black swans do indeed exist.
I like it, how you seem very willing to let people die to save a business or two. GO F YOURSELF man! π
I wonder when they will get ride of the "GODDAM". π
You should ask about the thousands of crew and the training center who have lost their jobs .
And just who is going to buy a cruise ship right now?
It is not a great time to be alive .
It's the end of cruising – it has gone the same way of the A380 and the Boeing 747's. All that's lacking are the funeral rites……
I've never been on a cruise. I'm not interested in cruising. But I keep watching your videos. I love your intro, backgrounds, and the way you speak casually :o)
Is your head really that skinny? π
Yeah the longer the pandemic goes on the higher the probability that more cruise ships are on the block. If the pandemic is a year or more thing many of the cruise ship companies will file for bankruptcy. Only a fool would put down a deposit or keep credit money there as one is an unsecured creditor if a line goes bankrupt. The other lines not only Holland America are in a lurch because of the pandemic!
The Carnival Sensation needs to be scrapped.
Just my humble opinion.
There is a deadly pandemic !!!!! No cruising till 2021 !!!
Make the discarded ships practical by turning them into prisons.
Don, do you not understand what is really going on ??? π how this is about a globalist/communist take over if the western world, and that order to accomplish that goal they need people to be as miserable as possible so that they will give up their rights so the government can βhelpβ them out of this exaggerated crisis. Do you not understand that ??
We were scheduled to go on a Celtic Thunder cruise on the Amsterdam in Feb 2021. First, in May it got postponed to Feb 2022. Then the ship got sold. I still haven't heard from the trip organizer/travel agency. OY!
Holland America is my favorite and I'm not old. I would never go on a Carnival cruise ship, nor do I like princess. But the banks own all the cruise ships. I no longer like Royal Caribbean, or big ships that fill like a mall. I'm not wearing a mask on vacation, nor do I want to be in a sea of mask. people wake-up, this is not about a virus.
Itβs important for other countries to remember , the country that developed the vaccine owns that vaccine, and they will distribute it to their citizens first , then extras or laster production could be available to other countries. JUST A REMINDER THAT THE VACCINE COULD BE AVAILABLE IN THE US ONLY FOR A WHILE BECAUSE PRODUCTION LIMITS COULD GOVERN THE AVAILABLE AND DISTRIBUTION.
who is buying the cruise ships as they would have same problem, cant cruise
Can you call me at. Home. I can talk LIke this good Im a 68 man i love to talk you pppppppzzzzzzz call me oh my name is john DUsbrow
