Every evening something fairly rare and special takes place at Takasaki Station which is Gunma Prefectures largest train station located centrally of course in Takasaki City. Each night in the few minutes before sunset, Starlings (called Mukudori in Japan) start circling in the sky’s above the East Exit/Entrance. At first, they arrive in small groups of 10, 20, and 30 but then grow to a mass in the thousands. They perform this aerial ritual each and every evening prior to settling in for the night. Once settled in they share information with each other also using the masses for protection.
Each year I also perform my own ritual migrating back to Japan to hike the numerous volcanoes throughout the country. Although volcano hiking is magical in its own sense, after exerting so much effort to reach the peaks, enjoying the reward of the view, seeing the starlings in-flight, undisturbed by the city noises, the people, other birds inflight, is truly a magical experience.
Like most things I see in Japan that are ritualized as well, the comings and going of people throughout the station, the trains and Shinkansen themselves, arriving and departing, these starlings also do what it is they do…but I also cant help but seeing most citizens (as in the inhabitants of Takasaki or those that may be traveling for business), are seemingly also unimpacted by this performance, this gift of nature…as if everything, the Shinkansen, the people, the starlings…is all just accepted routine.

高崎駅は高崎市の中心部に位置する群馬県最大の駅で、毎晩かなり珍しい特別な出来事が起こります。毎晩、日没の数分前から、ムクドリ（日本では椋鳥と呼ばれます）が、東口・入口の上空を旋回し始めます。最初は 10 人、20 人、30 人の小さなグループでやって来ますが、その後数千人の集団に成長します。彼らは毎晩、夜を迎える前にこの空中儀式を行います。一度定住すると、彼らは保護のために大衆を利用して互いに情報を共有します。
私も毎年、日本に戻って日本中の数多くの火山をハイキングする独自の儀式を行っています。火山ハイキングはそれ自体が魔法のようなものですが、苦労して頂上に到達した後、景色の恩恵を享受し、街の騒音に邪魔されずに飛んでいるムクドリや、人々や他の鳥たちが飛んでいるのを見るのは、本当に素晴らしいことです。魔法のような体験。
私が日本で目にするほとんどの儀式化されたもの、駅中の人々の行き来、電車や新幹線そのものの到着と出発と同じように、このムクドリもありのままのことをしているのです…しかし私も助けることができませんしかし、ほとんどの市民（高崎の住民や出張中の人たちも同様）を見ると、このパフォーマンス、この自然の贈り物の影響を受けていないように見えます…あたかも新幹線、人々、ムクドリのすべてであるかのように。 . すべてはただ受け入れられた日常的なものです。
