[Kyoto Walk] Fushimi’s Fire Festival 🔥”Misu no Torch Festival”

The Misu no Torch Festival is an intense celebration where men carry massive torches through the streets. It is rooted in a legend dating back to about 1300 years ago during the Jinshin War. According to the legend, Emperor Tenmu, on his way to a decisive battle with the Imperial Court, was welcomed by local residents who lit giant torches to illuminate the night as he passed through the Misu region.

Although the festival briefly ceased after World War II, it was revived in 1989 and is now designated as an Intangible Folk Cultural Property by the city of Kyoto. This festival holds significant historical and cultural importance as it commemorates a pivotal event in Kyoto’s past. Today, it continues to be a cherished tradition celebrated by both locals and visitors.
