The Ueno zoo is located in Ueno Park, Taito-ku, Tokyo, and is 8-10 minutes walk from JR Ueno Station, Subway Ueno Stations (Ginza-line or Hibiya-line), Keisei Ueno Station, or Subway Nezu Station (Chiyoda-line).

It is home to more than 3000 animals and 400 species

Ueno Zoo provides free entry on March 20 (Ueno Zoo Anniversary), May 4 (Midori no Hi) and October 1 (Tomin no Hi).

This Zoo is divided into 63 main sections, grouped into such categories as the Gorilla and Tiger’s Forest, Japanese Animals, The Children’s Zoo (with animal petting area), Animals of Africa, a Birdhouse, and the Vivarium (turtles and reptiles).

Some of the major attractions includes the Panda, Elephants, Tiger, Lion, Polar Bear etc.
The Aye-Aye forest exhibits animals native to Madagascar, including aye-ayes,fossas,lemurs.
These are kept in a nocturnal room
Ueno Zoo is the only Japanese facility that houses aye-aye.

The Five-storied Pagoda and the tea ceremony house give the zoo a Japanese touch.
The pagoda was built in 1631, then rebuilt after destruction by fire

The East Garden and West Garden of the zoo is connected by a 90 sec monorail ride. It is the
first monorail in the country
One way ride costs 150 yen (80 yen for children)
Further, one can also travel on foot via the Aesop bridge which connects both the ends
