This giant statue of Kannon, the goddess of mercy, is right outside of the JR Ofuna Station (west exit). Construction was first begun in 1929, but was halted due to the war in the Pacific/China. It was finally completed in 1960. It also contains a flame from the fires lit by the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. The flame rests in a mushroom-shaped statue.

Ofuna Station is only one stop before Kita-kamakura Station, so if you are one your way to Kamakura, I suggest you take a short detour and visit this giant Buddha statue.

  1. @strati5 Thanks! My dad was filming me, we went to Ofuna during his visit. It makes me look less crazy when someone else is filming me and I'm not just holding a camera in front of my face.

  2. Great! This is in my neighbourhood 🙂 I live in Ofuna and see the Ofuna Kannon every day.

  3. I saw this statue last Sunday from the JR train when I was traveling to Yakasuka naval yard. I did all the research I could and now I want to go back and see it. I'm fascinated by it. Sadly though, I have to leave for the states Friday morning. Hopefully my company will send me back and I'll have time to do it. The history of it is unlike anything I've ever come across. Look me up on Facebook (Steve Laino). My timeline and profile pic is the one and only shot I got of her.
