Ishikari Beach is designated as an “excellent natural area” under the Hokkaido Natural Environment Conservation Guidelines, and despite being located in the suburbs of a large city, just 45 minutes by car from central Sapporo, it has a large-scale natural seaside environment rich in biodiversity. It is one of the most valuable natural beaches left in Japan.
The 25km-long coastal dune topography was formed by the sand carried by the Ishikari River and brought to the coast by the northwestern monsoon winds, a large-scale seaside plant community, and Japan’s largest natural oak forest, all of which create the unique vegetation of coastal dunes. It is an outstanding natural element of Ishikari Beach, including the belt structure, coastal grasslands, wild birds on the waterfront, birds of prey, and insects that live in an environment unique to the beach.
