Rishhakuji is a temple complex located in the mountains east of Yamagata City. This is also commonly known as Yamadera, the same name as the town where risshakuji is located. This temple is famous for the place where Matsuo Basho wrote the oft quoted haiku: “Ah this silence – Sinking into the rocks – voice of cicada.” It is also well-known for having just over 1,000 stone steps visitors must climb in order to reach the picturesque views of Kaisando Hall and Nokyodo.
