In today’s video I talk about how I learned Japanese, how long it took me, some of the struggles I faced, as well as how I moved to Japan.

It’s a bit of a long story, and I didn’t want to just do it sitting in my room since it was such a nice day outside, so I went out for a nice ride on the mountain bike to the nearby mountains.

This video is fairly long and is mostly me talking the entire time. I tried to keep it as short as I could, but there’s so much I could talk about with this topic and so much more I want to go into detail about, like strategies and tips I recommend, but I figured I’d save that for another video.

If you want to see more videos about learning Japanese, please let me know in the comments!

  1. long story short…. IT'S A LONG STORY
Deciding to learn Japanese has possibly been the biggest life changing event in my life so far, and I'm so happy I committed to it despite all of the ups and downs throughout the process.. Join along on today's ride where I share my story of how I started studying Japanese and how I ended up coming to Japan (now is my 3rd time)

Planning to make a similar video where I ask my wife (Thuong) to share her story, so leave questions if you have them!

  2. Cruise, you're awesome, I like you. First time I watch your channel I was like "another foreigner in japan video". But then I realised that this is another hidden gem that worth to be found.

  3. What a great inspiration you are, how difficult would it be to teach Castilian/spanish/Madrid with out knowing Japanese, in Japan. I know a little, but I can learn it I believe. Living there would force me to REALLY use it. I think of Japan so often!! It would be a dream come true for me. I am taking care of my parents, they are at that age where they need help. But seriously thinking of a change when they leave me… And Japan may be it! Take good care my friend

  4. But I really worry about you can enjoy offroad biking or not.
Because it is hard to find offroad in this country, mostly covered.
I have a mountainbike.I was really excited when I bought it.
Now it's already kind of a bonsai art on a bicycle trainer, haha.

  5. I have a question that I was hoping you'd answer in this video but you didn't. When you went to study abroad in Japan, were your textbooks also in japanese? I know there are countries like Sweden where study abroad students had their class material in English rather than in the native language.

  6. Hopefully you can make those videos for efficient learning. It will help a lot of foreigners living in Japan. Shout out to the people in Kanagawa!

  7. Glad to hear that it all worked out well for you. Funny how sometimes the best bits in life are often unplanned. Keep on rolling!

  8. Clearly you are very focused with your goals. I have a similar experience learning and speaking French. It is tiring when you first learn a new language. I would like to see a video on how you film your vlogs. You have an interesting life. Good luck.

  9. Good story! When i teach Japanese to my family, I aware how Japanese is difficult. More, I feel you have a passion to make your life fun!

  10. well, it's also very interesting writing Japanese by using traditional writing brush.😁

  11. I've been trying to learn Japanese for 30 years with no noticeable success. I need proper classes and a structured lesson plan, and I can't afford it, so I do what I can.
But much to my surprise; I went to Osaka, visited the Outdoor Museum of Traditional Farmhouses and found myself sitting by the fire in one of the farmhouses talking with a docent who didn't speak any English. It was a slow and somewhat difficult conversation, but we managed to work through it.

  13. very interesting. I went to 1st and 2nd grade there, long long time ago (50 years). My memories of Japan are way different from what I see in your videos. thank you for the chance to revisit.

  14. Hi Cruise! I've been watching your videos for a couple of days now and I'm really enjoying it!! I really love Japan and would really like to go there and also started to like biking for a couple of months now. Then uddenly stumble on your youtube videos which has a really great content and contains both Japan Adventures and Bike!!! Please do more videos and would really love to watch! More power and Godbless! ❤️ From Philippines!

  15. One of my favorite japan stories: I'm from mccreary county (very close to lindsey wilson) — on a trip to japan we met a teacher from america, it turns out she's from elizabethtown and knew my group of friends from there. It's a small world 🙂 Cheers, loving the channel

  16. Appreciate you taking the time to tell your journey. I’ve been living here in Japan for almost 15 years and it’s hard to be immense yoursef in the Japanese language because I work in the U.S. bases here . I love cycling and that’s probably why I love living here because of the awesome scenery routes!

  17. Great videos thanks – wanted to ask if you could live in any city in Japan and do lots of biking what city would it be. Would it still be Nagoya? Or maybe another city. Thanks

  18. Cruise, would love to know how you learned Japanese. I have the problem of not being able to retain information I've learned. Been in Korea 7 years now and am not near Korean fluency. I want to know what worked for you with Japanese. Thanks.

  19. End of the old year, beginning of the new year is a great time to do a review, and just as important, to give a summary analysis like you did at 11'50". I like biking, but one of the things I like about your channel is the integration, like how you talk about your job, food, etc. I'm looking forward to seeing your Taiwan and Vietnam videos; I'm saving them for when I can sit through all of them at once to put a picture together. Hope you'll have a chance to do similar videos for Japan when you are a tourist and not a working man.

BTW, my bit of luck was I didn't have enough points to get into Japanese, this was during the start of the bubble so I took Chinese thinking it would help me with Japanese. A year later I was beating students from Harvard and Yale in writing contest, leading to full scholarship including stipend to study in Taiwan. How could I say no. Life is full of surprises – but we have to be ready to take advantage of them.
