D: Maple, did you enjoy taking trains to Kobe?
M: Yes, we used the Seishun 18 kippu, so it took us 5 hours to get to Kobe from Hamamatsu, but it was no problem for me. I enjoyed reading books and looking out the window to see the views.
D: That’s great to hear. When we have enough time, like a long vacation, using the Seishun 18 kippu is a great way to travel around Japan and save money.
M: I think so. I want to learn more about the Seishun 18 kippu because I really want to explore Japan on a budget. I’ve made a lot of friends on social media who live all over Japan, so I would like to visit them someday.
D: Wow, you’re becoming very good at solo traveling.
M: Thanks.

D: The Seishun 18 kippu is actually a type of discounted railway ticket available to travelers in Japan, typically during specific seasons.
M: What seasons are these?
D: They are available during spring, summer, and winter. The ticket is valid for five different travel days, not necessarily consecutive, but all five days must be used within one of those specific seasonal validity periods.
M: I see. But more than one person can use the same ticket, right? Like we did.
D: Exactly. You always have to be with other members traveling with you. If you travel together from one place to another, more than one person can use the ticket at the same time.
M: That’s cool.

D: The ticket allows unlimited travel on local and rapid JR trains. It’s often associated with youth and is popular among young people for exploring different parts of Japan affordably, but adults can use it as well.
M: That’s great. How much does the ticket cost?
D: It’s currently priced at 12,050 yen. Keep in mind that details about such tickets may change, so it’s a good idea to check for the most up-to-date information on the JR website or at JR stations if you plan to use one.
M: Okay, thanks for the advice.
D: Basically, if you divide the total amount by 5, it comes to 2,410 yen, so if your travel costs in one day are expected to exceed 2,410 yen, then it’s worth using the ticket. For example, it cost us 5,720 yen each to reach our first destination, Motomachi.
M: Wow, so it already exceeded the price of a single ride.
D: That’s right.
M: I’ve learned how great the Seishun 18 kippu is. I’ll definitely use the ticket during those specific seasons.
D: Ya, that’s a great idea.
Actually, I once went to Tsumagoi Village in Gunma Prefecture using that ticket.
It was almost a full day on local trains–but that’s why I wanted to go there that way. It was so much fun! I enjoy riding trains, and the views of Japan were amazing!
M: That sounds awesome! I want to try using the tickets for a long trip like that.

M: You know, I’m thinking about trying a solo trip to Kyoto using the ticket next time.
D: Wow, that sounds great. I think you’re definitely old enough to do that. I’ll make sure to share some must-visit spots with you.
M: Cool. I can’t wait!
