Kiyomizu-dera Temple is located in Higashiyama area, east part of Kyoto. It takes 20 minutes by bus from Kyoto Station. Kiyomizu-dera Temple is said to have been founded in 778 and has existed since before Kyoto became the capital. It was registered as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site in 1994.
The main hall behind the Todoroki Gate is designated as a national treasure. The main hall (Hondo) is a national treasure. The stage (Butai) spreads out in front of the main hall. When you think of Kiyomizudera, the first thing that comes to mind is the stage of Kiyomizu. From the stage, you can overlook the city of Kyoto and you can also see Kyoto Tower. You can enjoy stunning view from the stage.
From the Okunoin stage, you can see the stage of Kiyomizu and the main hall.
The main hall is built on a steep cliff of Mt. Otowa, and the stage is about 13 meters above the foundation stone below the cliff. An earthquake-resistant structure in which timbers arranged in a grid support each other makes it possible to build on steep cliffs. The current stage was rebuilt in 1633 by Tokugawa Iemitsu.
The groundwater that springs up from Mt. Otowa flows down three troughs into the basin of the waterfall. The three waters are said to have the benefits of “life,” “love,” and “study.” When you come to Kyoto, be sure to visit Kiyomizu-dera Temple.
