Takachiho is a town in northern Miyazaki. One of the things that makes Takachiho famous is its gorge. The sheer cliffs, lined with waterfalls, lead into beautiful turquoise waters. The cliffs are made of slow forming volcanic basalt columns. I guess thanks goes to Mount Aso for this one.

Takachiho is also centred around some Japanese myths. Takachiho is home to the Shinto sun goddess Amaterasu. Amano Iwato Shrine is dedicated to the cave that Amaterasu hid in to avoid her brother. The path near the shrine leads down to Amano Yasukawara. This is the cave where the gods and goddesses met to discuss their strategy of luring Amaterasu out of hiding. There is another shrine here and thousands of stacked rocks around it. (I felt this was a little too complicated to explain in the video especially since I’m not well versed in Japanese mythology. Though this trip has sparked an interest.)

I really loved my little day trip to Takachiho. This was on my list as soon as I found out where I’d be living in Japan. It also made me want to explore more of Miyazaki Prefecture so hopefully I get back there soon.

Much love and happy travels
