In August 1945, an event took place that changed history. The United States of America dropped the first ever nuclear weapon on the Japanese city of Hiroshima, then three days later a second bomb was dropped on the city of Nagasaki. The immediate death toll is estimated to have been well over 100,000 people, but many more died in the years that followed from radiation-related illnesses.

The attack has caused a lot of controversy over the years as to whether it was right for the US to deploy such devastating damage some believe it was justified, and others do not. In this short documentary, you will see the build up, the attack and the aftermath of the world first and only A-bomb attack…

  1. I did an essay on these attacks in high school. They make me sick to this day and I'm an American… I think this was really wrong of us

  2. My father "Richard Greenwald" was to be part of "Operation Olympic" the invasion of southern Kyushu. He was attached to the 6th Army.
By the time of surrender, the Japanese had over 735,000 military personnel either in position or in various stages of deployment on Kyushu alone.
Estimated U.S. casualties 150,000. If we didn't nuke Japan, so many Americans would have lost their lives and so many more would never have been born…including me. Thank God for the bomb!

  3. Well, try giving your sober story to the families that were impacted by Japan forces who bombed and killed many Americans at Pear Harbor. Japan killed so many in the Pacific, they started it, we finished it! War isn't fair.

  4. My god…what have we done?…80,000 lives lost instantly…wow!…they hit us first at Pearl Hatbor though, right?

  5. The plane shown at the beginning is, in fact a B-29 bomber, the kind used to drop the first and second nuclear bombs on Japan. However, like much of that which “passes for history” on the internet, the plane shown was not involved in dropping the bombs. Both of those planes, from Tinian Island and were both marked with a block T I think for the base. The rest of the video is fairly accurate. People at the time, who viewed those pictured, felt sadness but no more were sad than those relieved that the “Japs” as they were called at the time, were finally surrendering. It’s just not true that one side was attacked and shed blood. Many millions suffered under Japanese barbarism that made the dropping of the bombs like child’s play. The Imperial Japanese were the most vile of racists ever known on this earth. They were just like their counterparts, the Nazi’s/SS or the Italian Facists—though these were only brutal on the smallest of scales, having been trapped by their own stupidity and hubris to pledge support for Hitler.

  6. War crimes….War crimes….It was to show U.S.S.R. what will happen to them if war was to break out against them. That was the ONLY reason.

  7. The United States will forever be that very obnoxious and annoying relative that nobody wants at a family party.

  8. For them to say they had no idea the destruction and suffering that would stem from such an attack is BS. They knew the destruction power behind such a weapon. They new the radiation poisoning that would follow – hence the tragic accident that caused the death of Louis Slotin

  9. The sad thing is the war was virtually over and japan would have surrender even without the H bombs. This was a show of power.

  10. This was heart breaking and to no they were ordered to do this is just discusting the innocent people did not drserve this

  11. Actually we were prepared to drop an Atomic Bomb on Tokyo and the Japanese Emperor knew this. They did not fear an allied invasion.

  12. I've heard there was another reason, at least for the second bomb: Truman could see the Cold War coming, sorta, and the Nagasaki bomb was partly an indirect threat against the Soviets (who had been planning on invading Japan, IIRC)

  13. Ya know, I am absolutley appalled by the apologist attitude people have to Japan about this. They started it, we finished it. Does it suck, yeah. But you dont give crap to the gun that shoots the criminal. If not for the bomb, the world would be in the double digits of World Wars. The bomb has saved way more lives then it ever took.
