다이토구(台東区)에 위치한 아사쿠사(浅草)는 옛날부터 지금까지 시타마치(下町, 도시의 상공업 지역으로 상인이나 장인들이 많이 사는 지역)의 모습을 계속 보존하면서도 근대화를 추진해 온 곳입니다.
아사쿠사에 대해 이야기할 때 빼놓을 수 없는 것은 지금도 매년 3천만 명이 찾는다는 ‘센소지(浅草寺)’의 존재입니다.
센소지의 역사는 628년 어부였던 히노쿠마노 하마나리, 다케나리 형제가 스미다강에서 그물에 걸린 나무로 만든 불상을, 그 지역의 지도자인 하지노 아타이 나카토모(土師真中知)에게 보여준 것에서 시작됐습니다.
그 불상을 관세음보살로 본 하지노 아타이 나카토모는 자신의 집을 절로 바꿔 공양했고, 645년에 쇼카이 쇼닝이 관음당을 건립한 것으로, 도쿄 근처의 이 작은 어촌 지역은 몬젠마치(신사나 절 앞의 거리)로 서서히 활기를 띠게 되었다고 합니다.
한때 이 지역은 극장과 영화관 덕분에 활기를 띠었으나 시대와 사회의 변화로 점점 문을 닫게 되어 쓸쓸해졌지만, 센소지와 나카미세(仲見世), 다양한 노포 음식점, 그리고 시타마치 특유의 분위기를 느낄 수 있는 상점가 등 아사쿠사만의 매력은 여전히 살아있습니다. 또한, 도보로 갈 수 있는 ‘도쿄 스카이트리’의 출현으로 사람들의 관심이 더욱 높아져 아사쿠사는 지금도 도쿄와 일본을 대표하는 관광지 중 하나입니다.
The Asakusa district, located in Taito Ward (台東区) in Tokyo, has historically preserved the appearance of Shitamachi (downtown or lower town, typically the merchant and artisan quarters) while also promoting modernization.
One cannot discuss Asakusa without mentioning Senso-ji (浅草寺), a temple visited by 30 million people annually. The history of Senso-ji began in 628 when the brothers Hinokuma Hamanari and Takenari, who were fishermen, found a statue of Kannon, the goddess of mercy, in their fishing nets in the Sumida River. They showed the statue to the local leader, Hajino Atai Nakatomo, who recognized it as Kannon and transformed his house into a temple to honor it. In 645, Shokai Shonin built the Kannon Hall, gradually bringing life and vitality to this small fishing village near Tokyo as it transformed into Monzenmachi (a street in front of shrines or temples).
Although the area once thrived due to the presence of theaters and cinemas, societal and generational shifts led to their gradual closures, casting a pall of desolation. Despite this, the charm of Asakusa – embodied in Senso-ji, Nakamise (仲見世 shopping street), diverse street food establishments, and stores where one can experience the unique atmosphere of Shitamachi – remains alive. Moreover, the emergence of the Tokyo Skytree, within walking distance, has further heightened interest, solidifying Asakusa as one of the representative tourist destinations in Tokyo and Japan.
