In this video, I take you on a walk around Takada Castle and Park in Joetsu, Niigata. Takada Castle is a reconstructed castle that was originally built in 1614 by Matsudaira Tadateru, the sixth son of Tokugawa Ieyasu. The castle is surrounded by a park that features over 4,000 cherry trees, making it one of the best spots for hanami (cherry blossom viewing) in Japan (apparently).
The park also has a lotus pond that you can watch my video here:
I’ve been hearing about this castle and park for so many years and have always wanted to visit here. Unfortunately, the park of the former castle grounds were extremely disappointing. Most of the land has been cannibalized for schools and other public facilities. The castle reproduction sits atop a tiny hill in a small corner of what could have been a fabulous park. What a shame.
