“The world’s factory”. The place where people eat anything. In the West, if people know this city at all, they know it as Canton. In Africa, everyone knows it as Gwang Zuu, that city in China that all the Africans move to – and in 2020, it became a place that many Africans were deported from.
In China, this city is known as Guangzhou, the capital of Cantonese culture and China’s 3rd biggest city. The main language here isn’t Mandarin – it’s Cantonese. It was also the first place I ever moved to in China, so it holds an unusual place of nostalgia for me. There’s a lot going on here. It’s a bizarre but fascinating mix of cultures, something you rarely see in China: Cantonese, African, Arab, European.
Now, having returned 10 years later, I was curious to see if anything had changed.
