Today we get the absolute privilage of flying on All Nippon Airways for the first time, made even more special because it is on their only A380 route. They do have a couple aircraft, but they only fly between Tokyo Narita and Honolulu. Unfortunately our first class upgrade wasn’t possible, but the Business Class flight was still wonderful!

  1. Some airports in the world are great because they have iconic architecture (like Singapore, Doha, or the walkways in Paris). Honolulu, though, is great as it's one of the few that really bring local culture into its design. You'll know, from almost every camera shot, where in the world you are.

  2. that lounge is indeed impressive. "slippers designed i guess for ppl with hot toes" you kill me lol. anorher nice take off/climb (those clouds!) despite window frame. so indeed when WILL all wifi be free??#fairquestion. so how does one exactly "vibe on Tchaikovsky?!" obviously not with head banging motions ha! so that gap when the seat is flat would bug my back (hopefully the padding helped) and what is it with planes w/o air vents? anyway another awesome YT moment with this one. really dig your take off and landing captures. am slowly going thru the Ones series and savouring each

  3. Excellent trip report Patrick from what I can see they are five-star skytrax carrier just like their fellow Star Alliance partners Eva Air Singapore Airlines and across Sea of Japan South Korea Asiana Airlines. My family only My Father's Side chooses ANA for LAX to MNL via NRT/HND while my mothers side uses PR LAX-MNL which includes the B777-3F6/ER you flew on RP-C7774/RP-C7775. You should have domestic lounge access since ANA recognizes your Mileage Plus Star Alliance Gold status. Better option is actually ANA Mileage Club Star Alliance gold status over Mileage Plus because you can access United clubs like San Francisco Newark airport terminals A and C in addition to ANA lounges for domestic Japan travel. Regarding EWR Terminal C United Clubs you are going to encounter polish German Swiss and Austrian Miles and More HON Circle status members there.

  4. I flew on the ANA A380 HNL-NRT pre-pandemic. Enjoyed the experience. Where NRT is concerned, I remember when it was the primary airport for international flights. The rail system is efficient and was (my) mode of transportation back in the 1990's, so the hour ride meant 60 more minutes to enjoy scenery.

  5. Great blog as always. A bit different from Westray to Pappa Westray. I’ve just flown British Airways A380. The BA lounge at BHD boards from the lounge and I boarded a Lufthansa 747 to Dubai direct from the buisiness class lounge in Frankfurt. I think BA does direct lounge boarding in Boston too

  6. Used to fly the A380 regularly with Air France from JFK-CDG and I vividly remember my mom taking her first A380 flight with me (she has a fear of flying) and mentioning that it was the first time she had no fear whatsoever since not only is it so quiet, but its hard to tell when you are even taking off since the true size of the aircraft. A truly wonderful plane to experience. Before AF retired them, I would only book 380 flights.

  7. The way ANA is facilitating the boarding from the upstairs lounge directly to to the A380s upper deck is just amazing – this is how Airbus designers must have imagined the customer experience. Also, I wasn't aware of the large passenger volume on the route…

  8. It's really a pity that the 747 is gone, and the a380 is getting rarer. Hope the recent record load factors will be enough to convince most operators to keep it in the sky for longer beyond 2030. It's a shame when airline economics kills innovation in aviation. As it is, to see the future of aviation, you need to go to a museum (for the Concord).

  9. Hawaii seems like a great way to break up a trip to Tokyo, especially if one cannot fly in a premium cabin.

  10. The ba lounge at sfo let’s you board from the gate. Just flew club world a couple months ago

  11. Your video is good but you need to make it shorter like 15 minutes or so as most people don’t have time to watch 30 minutes long video.

  12. What is a more sustainable packaging than the thin, clear plastic wrap ANA uses? Sorry, you lost me on the full pronunciation of ANA's acronym. Why not always use the acronym ANA instead of risking your street "cred" with a bungled Japanese pronunciation attempt Done mutiple times? Or, did someone set you up to look foolish? Lesson learned?

  13. Me again; sorry. The reef runway was actually built to prevent the departing aircraft from flying over downtown Honolulu (or into it). Fact check?

  14. Besides travelling to Iran to fly classic planes or doing the United Airlines Island Hopper, a flight on ANA's A380 is real high on my avgeek bucket list. ANA was my favorite airline growing up as a kid obsessed with travel in Japan and the service is so unique. The aircraft is so nicely decorated inside and out, to set the scene for Hawaii. I have flown on A380s 4 times and after 8 years, will fly on one again this December with Asiana. I don't remember thinking much of it apart from how cool sitting on the upper deck was.

As time went on, started to consume more aviation content as I went into my teenage years and especially during COVID time, I became more aware of the praise the A380 gets from passengers. Having just got off an A350 flight, I can't help but think whether that hype is justified. The A350 is also very quiet, smooth and spacious, but I don't ever hear people say they would pay a premium or go out of their way to book a flight on the A350. I guess the A380's special status is held in higher regard amongst travelers. I guess I'll find out in a few months time.

  15. I flew the same flights from HNL to NRT and back earlier this month in business class. I enjoyed every minute of it. I could've flown from LAX, but instead decided to fly from HNL just to fly on the "flying honu." If I had one complaint, I would say the cabin temperature on the return flight was too hot. Maybe it was that comforter. But that aside, I loved both flights. Service was great as was the food!

  16. As usual, great, detailed trip report!! I'd like to start seeing you fly some of the lesser known airlines as you did when you went to Mongolia. Keep up the great work!!

  17. Amazing seats, but meal on a tray on business class? Not so classy, is it? Korean Air has got a rather unusual route (at least for me) US to GRU…???
Another great review Patrick… do keep on enjoying travelling business as much as you can… cheers to you
