From 2007-2015, the stationmaster cat Tama greeted guests to the Kishi, a quiet station at the end of the Wakayama Dentetsu Line. After passing away, Nitama and Yontama took over her spot, quietly keeping watch of the station where trains come about every 30 minutes.
The popularity of the cats might have saved this struggling rail company from falling into bankruptcy, as the area faces a drop in population and a shift towards driving – issues that plague many rail operators in rural areas.

  1. I came across a article about them. Tama (the 1st stationmaster cat) was 20 years old! April 29, 1999 – June 22, 2015. I hope to meet Yontama an Nitama when I go to Japan next year. They are so precious, it melts my heart! 😍
