I take a visit to Book Off in central Kyoto (and get kicked out)
Book Off (ブックオフコーポレーション) is Japan’s largest chain of used bookstores. Founded in August 1991, the company has had explosive success, expanding to 866 stores throughout Japan and eight overseas locations (as of August 2006). In addition to books, its chains also sell manga, CDs, DVDs, video games, and even used video game consoles, mobile phones and portable media players. The stores are distinguished by their large surface area, cleanliness and bright illumination.
I took some footage of the Book Off next to my work in central Kyoto, but was told to stop recording.
The best Book Off I ever went to was in Hirakata City, between Kyoto and Osaka called Book Off Bazaar. It sells everything from guitars, to hi-fi equipment, to snowboarding gear to Moncler jackets, all in tip-top condition. It’s also the kind of place that tourists never visit and as such, worth a visit if you want to see somewhere in Japan that tourists never visit. See the links below.
