Lisa I really appreciate you opening up and sharing your own experience. As an Asian American myself, I have the same concerns when I travel abroad and in rural America. Lots of internal dialogues and fears that I stand out like a sore thumb. Fortunately I have never experienced any racism or been discriminated against while traveling, occasionally I do get stares thankfully not in a negative way. I am also in an interracial relationship, my boyfriend and I have these conversations too. Sometimes I wonder if my experiences would be different if I was traveling with my family or with people of Asian descent. My advice to the lady who asked the question is to always be nice, smile. We may look different, speak a different language but kindness is universal and people do notice 🙂
Great series and thoughtful responses, would love a gear haul in a future video! What are your go-to packs (Cotopaxi v Tortuga v alt brand) and what do you typically bring on a medium length trip?
Hi Lisa and Josh,
Great podcast. I felt your pain Lisa as you recount those instances where you felt sidelined because of who you are. Racism stings. I experienced it for first time as a South American woman in my mid 60s travelling with my friends in 2012 in North West, I was refused service at diner. I could not believe it but it stung and more than 10 yrs later remembering about it, it still stings, that is not my hang up but theirs. So I feel for you but I also believe that the more we travel the more we are open to greater understanding.
Recently lost my Asia wife of 33 years. We traveled extensively and yes, racism is real. Don’t ever let stupid people stop you. The vast majority are good. Keep following your dreams. It’s great watching you guys.
I love your identity . I love you both . huge hugs.
1:51 OMG…that's my question that I posted in your other Travel Thursday video from last week! 🤭 Thank you so much for addressing it 🤩. Ubigi is just a little more expensive than Airalo, but it appears that it's worth it. And apologies for the grammatical error in my question! You two are awesome 🤗. When are you back in Korea and Japan?!?!?!?
Thank you for being so candid and I think this is really super important for all women travelers! Thank you!
34:12 "Do you think that person slighted me or said something to me because I'm Asian?"
Yes 💯. Please don't ever think otherwise because Asian hate is alive and well 😔. Please be safe in your travels and never let your guard down.
You both are so adored by all of us. I hope you know how much❤
OMG, as an Asian dude, I was totally gonna ask you this, too! So interesting to hear your thoughts on it!
Lisa, that was definitely a brave question for you to answer. It's a shame that there is still racism out there and I can't believe that people are still taking the time to make horrible comments on Youtube or any other social channel. It just speaks as to what sort of person they really are behind the keyboard. PS. Lisa, I love your top, what brand is it?
As an Asian American women who has traveled solo to over 20 countries since I was 18 yo, I have experienced racism in every country. Sometimes the racism is out of ignorance, sometimes it's out of hate but it always does affect me to some extent. I don't know why people think it's ok to spew hateful remarks but I've learned to have a thicker skin and sometimes I will say something back. I think it's because these kind of people believe that Asian women are docile and submissive? I don't know but I think it catches them off guard when I do stand up for myself. In a weird way, these experiences have made me stronger and wiser as a person and to not live in fear. My hope is that the next generations don't have to deal with racism as much as we do. But as humans, we'll probably find something else to discriminate each other about. Lol…anyway, I still travel and I love it. We all have free will. We can choose to be loving and peaceful or be hateful and live in fear. I know from my travels the majority of people chooses the first option.
Interestingly enough the only place I’ve experienced difficulties has been in my own country, southern United States. The only place I’ve felt scammed has been mainland China.
Interesting article regarding baggage free travel. I DO enjoy the challenge of maneuvering two weeks of travel needs into a carry on. We typically try to book lodging that has a laundry on site or we look for a laundromat locally in case we need to do laundry during that time. So fun!
Lisa – I'm here tearing up with you. Thanks so much for having the courage to share your thoughts on your experience! I'm Chinese American and live in Italy and have experienced more racism here in Italy than anywhere I've traveled, and it's hard because nobody here understands why it's a problem or why it upsets me…which sometimes leaving me feel like I'm the dramatic one. I'd love to continue hearing more of your experience on this as it comes up as it's something I've been thinking more about personally how to support others in the same position. Sending you both love! xx
Thanks for answering my question, Lisa. Your honesty was much appreciated.
I rarely respond to a video but the last part makes me tear up. As an Asian Canadian woman, I completely understand what Lisa was talking about. Even in my day to day subconsciously all I want to do is blend in. For a long long time post COVID I felt afraid to be in the world (even the city I called my own) because of what I look like and other people's assumptions of who I am as a person based on my face. And to what you and Josh said about the differential treatment you two receive, I feel this in my bones. Even if you aren't in physical danger from overt racism, it doesn't mean it doesn't take a toll. It's mentally taxing to live or even occupy a space and feeling that you don't belong and everybody knows it.
I hear you Lisa. I am Asian. My partner is white Caucasian. We are a same-sex couple. People defer to my partner even when I organised and paid for the booking, whether it be for travel, dining or accommodation. This would also happen in Asia.
You sure created something great , believe me , i followed you all over the world , including 2 caminos , you cannot get better than that😅
This is an amazing podcast , so much depth , nuances and perspective , Thank You , Lisa and Josh, i will archived it on my favourite list
Thank you for sharing. The quote you shared resonated with me. It is how I feel about Japan really, it feels like home away from home. Where else when i was in Europe, i didn't feel that way and to be honest, i don't think I could travel around there by myself.
Okay next video is you guys reserving clothes from Japan airlines and only wearing what they give you!
Good to see you guys in my beautiful home country. I hope you have a wonderful time in NZ and that my countrymen and women treat you with kindness and respect.
That was beautiful. We love you guys. x
Another excellent mixture of discussing social media and travel.Let
Lisa, you're the best! Sending lots of virtual hugs!
There will always be some minority of people being racist, everyone should ignore them, like there are jerks everywhere too with stupid manners, and most of the time, you don't even need to travel to meet them. In all countries at the contrary you will find good and nice people to share about their culture, that's what we all should focus about. I love your videos, keep sharing your beautiful trips with us 🙂
Hello Lisa and Josh
The last topic was quite touched me.
I am 60 , Japanese, divorced,and living in Europe.
Lisa …I feel for you!
Thank you for honest , true opinion.
Big hugs ❤
Omg I just woke up this morning singing travel Thursday, travel Thursday. I can’t get this jingle out of my head lol
Lisa and Josh, thanks for sharing a part of your life. I'm white and my Asian wife of 37 years have seen quite a bit during our life and travels. I can relate to what Josh was saying at 34:25 it has happened more times than I can count. Please don't give up on the world, there are more good people than bad ones in it.
Thanks for sharing your experiences with us, especially the last topic.
