Japan’s Tourism “Problem” & New ESSENTIAL Things To Know Before Arriving In Japan | Travel Update
Japan is seeing a MASSIVE influx of tourists. With tourism almost back to pre pandemic levels, there has been alot of talk about “too” many tourists lately — more specifically, too many tourists in certain areas. Much like Tokyo and Kyoto before covid, local governments are beginning to raise their concerns about all the tourists clogging the streets and interrupting daily lives — which is, in turn, causing some changes with some iconic tourist options. Watch this video and learn more about what is happening in Japan and what to expect now that there are certain steps being taken to scale tourists back in some areas. Let me know what you think of all this in the comments section below as well!

The JR pass is incredibly expensive as is and that hike is tragic. It's kind of annoying because it's such good value for money for those who want to travel around Japan (something can both be expensive and still be good value for money example a car). When I went in 2019 we only passed through Kyoto, Osaka, Nara and Tokyo (we did have a brief excursion to Kinosaki Onsen) but that's because of how close they were. We would've loved to have gone to Sendai, Hiroshima and Fukkuoka but couldn't. I don't think that's fair and it might have benefitted from a separate pass for those cities, whether they want to hike up that price I don't know, and have a JR pass that excludes them and a final one that's together -but who am I to know, they might've done their research! It's not going to stop people from crowding the JR lines as they're the best method of transport. But it would provide better information to the train companies and government and might improve the experience.
I understand the frustration of over-tourism, it's very sad and annoying. But Japan WANT tourists, it needs them because of that state of it's economy which they've just proved. Removing all of the thing that benefits tourists and make it such a wonderful place to visit, without actually tackling the issue or providing an alternative solution seems very reactionary. It's in this state because they closed for 3 years. They've had plenty of time to come up with solutions…
I also think not only campaigning to visit new places but also the time of travel. Everyone wants to see cherry blossoms but Japan in the fall is also JUST as beautiful.
Too much trouble to know, don't go! I want to visit a place where the government appreciates my hard-earned money.
Thank you for the info. Traveling for the first time to Tokyo in November.
I wish the Kyoto Congestion Map would cover Northern Kyoto as in Mt. Hiei, Kifune Shrine, and Enkou-ji.
gonna need to expand the train system
Landing in Tokyo next Sunday at 13.05! Can not wait! I am beyond excited!
Is it worth buying JR Pass now if I plan to travel in December this year?
over tourism is real. It took me 4 hours just to clear immigration at Narita airport last April 1 and slept at the airport as the trains already stopped. I am dreading it as I will fly to Tokyo again this Oct 31 and will arrive at night again and may encounter similar song lines again due to the peak autumn travel season. Due to the situation, I do travel off the beaten path mostly focusing on the Tohoku Region like Aomori and Sendai this year as only 1% of tourists go there. I have been traveling yearly to Japan since 2009, except during 3 year Covid19 restriction.. having been to Japan close to 30 times already.. I avoid Kyoto and Osaka now and have been to many prefectures already from Hokkaido to Okinawa… and have been to all 4 major islands including Shikoku.
I went to Kyoto and Osaka 2 weeks ago and it has changed so much compared to when I went a few years ago. Firstly, the people aren’t as friendly anymore. I even got scammed by the taxi driver. They also start charging for literally everything, even utensils when I ordered cake. When I stayed at a hotel 5 years ago, they offered many breakfast items and now when I went this year, I’ve been eating grass every day for breakfast. They definitely need money to heal their economy. Lesson learned. Won’t be going back there to waste my money, especially Osaka.
This seems counterproductive when billions of yins spent to promote tourism and yet some cities are crying about it. I am sure the majority of businesses in koyoto would not be happy to see the number of tourists vanish or slow down. Definitely, Osaka and koyoto are not on my list. Most likely Tokyo, Yokohama, Hokkaido, and a couple of onsens and waterfalls sights.
Nice video again 👍 👌
Going next June, good to know! Thank you!
Where can we get the map for Congestion?
What about water radiation contamination, are we safe eating sea food
Or they can funnel tourists into a tourist only bus route or train lines.
Everyone just got used to the pandemic era quiet but that wasn’t sustainable economically for Japan.
Also, people just like to complain
Sounds like a lot of revenge-travel going on. Look at Disney World at the moment, numbers are down now since it opened years earlier. Sure, this example's apples & oranges, but after a few years maybe the demand may slow?
Thank you!
I still don't understand, why JR forces people to stay more in the popular cities with the new prices…. maybe a kind of 10-travels card, where travelling to smaller cities just takes half of a trip.
I will go to Japan in November for the first time, and yes guilty, I will stay in Kyoto for 5 nights, Beppu for 2 nights and Tokyo for 7. Doing day-trips, with the JR Pass out of Kyoto and Tokyo. After this experience, my next trip, will go of the beaten path. But why do I feel, that I have to be sorry for this kind of plan now ?😢
Tokyo and Kyoto are not the only places to visit in Japan. People are cramming in those places.
Why don't they go to other cities or prefectures?
