In ancient times, part of Maizuru City was included in “Region of Wakasa” and supplied ingredients for meals lined up on the emperor’s dining table. There is a record, excavated from the site of Heijokyo, the capital of Nara, that sushi was presented from the area including the present Maizuru city about 1300 years ago, and which is considered to be the oldest material regarding sushi in Japan. Thus, Maizuru, which can be called the “birthplace of Japanese sushi”, is known as a place rich in fish and shellfish.
