Rugby shrine in Kyoto JAPAN, a unique experience at the Birthplace of Rugby in the Kansai region

Have you ever heard of a rugby shrine?

The Sawata shrine is located in Kyoto within Shimogamo shrine (one of 17 UNESCO world heritage sites in Kyoto).

In this shrine, Kantama-no-mikoto is enshrined.
According to legend, the deity brings progress to all ball players.

There is an inscribed stone monument with the words “first kick site”.
After rugby had been introduced to Japan at the end of the 19th century, the students of Keio university taught rugby to the students of Kyoto university in front of Sawata shrine in 1910. In 1969, the former rugby players of Kyoto university built the monument stone.

The Ema (wooden plate of wishes) is sold at Sawata shrine in a box next to the Torii gate and amulets are sold at Kawai and Shimogamo shrine.

If you come to Kyoto, don’t miss it!
