Katayamazu is the youngest of Kaga’s three hot spring districts, opening to tourists after development in the Meiji era (1868–1912). In 2012, a new resort called the Sōyu opened on Mount Haku, overlooking Lake Shibayama. Within its all-glass facade, its baths are designed to make visitors feel at one with the spectacular vistas outside.
