Quiet quitting is a consequence of an unhealthy or toxic working environment. In the current day and age, employers should strive to do their best in retaining workers. Requiring what you term as 'going the extra mile' indicates a lack of managerial skills as you need more workers to do the tasks.
ALWAYS REMEMBER THIS RULE "They pretend to pay you, you pretend to work!"
I've worked in a couple corporate businesses, and it's very true that hard work is no longer rewarded. I've had a colleague in my team who would literally do 2-3x the amount of work required, she was amazing and helped me develop templates which helped the whole team of 200+ members become more effective. She was trying to get a promotion which I tried to help her with, so I spoke with 2 senior managers at the time, and I was told that she is the best performer in the whole team, and because of that, she will be most valuable and bring in most revenue if she stays in her current position… I admittedly made her aware of my bosses point of view and within a couple weeks she found a much better role in a different company..
What's also true is that many companies want to keep you in your place, any sort of improvement proposed to processes would be disregarded and dismissed on the basis that you're just trying to avoid working, whilst the senior managers were usually people 40yo+ who often had no clue what new tech and options are available these days to make work more effective.
Working the bare minimum is really the only option for people like us, who are paid hourly, without any incentives like shares/ bonuses and lack of growth from the employer.
Also, If my boss comes into work in their brand new exotic car, and dismisses my request for a justified higher compensation an the basis that the company is struggling financially and its not the best time… there is honestly no way I will be putting in more than the minimum requirement.
I quiet quit 2 yrs ago when they stopped giving me a raise even though my stats were above required amounts. I now hit each stat exactly to what I’m required and not one single action more.
If I work 10 hours a day, i want payment for those 10 hours a day. But i will work my ass off in those 10 hours, no question about that
I preciate your content highly, but I have to heavily disagree here. You brought up the example of what happens when a company decides to fire people, and implied that those who quietly quit are the first ones to go. That's not correct.
If you work for a smaller company, like yours (no offense), of course it'll be a different story, because one can tell how much effort one is putting in. But if you work for a corporation, it's an entirely different story.
If a company does bad, they fire people (because wages make up about a third of any company's costs). If a company does ok, they still fire people because you never know that the future holds. And even if a company does golden, they still fire people, sometimes in the thousands. Just to please the markets and the shareholders. I've seen it happen time and time again. Bigger companies have no regard for the individual – as opposed to, let's say, your agency. Bigger companies know no loyalty. Zero, zilch, todo, nada, naught. You're but a number on a sheet.
In addition, what ends up happening, is 50% of the employees do about 100% of the work. This is true for every bigger companies. That means the other half is busy doing something close to nothing. I've also seen that happen time and time again. So one would think that the latter half is gon' get fired once the companies decides to let people go. NO! Not true. You know why? The latter half is busy going on coffee breaks, lunch times with management aka the decision makes. They even spend time after work and sometimes go on vacation later. I know this is grossly oversimplified, but it still holds up.
So when management goes through the list of employess, they will fire those that they don't personally know or don't have much interaction with. And usually, those are all the people who do all the work. The quiet sufferers, if you will. They have no big profile, are very little know, just BECAUSE they're busy working. I worked for a US corporation in a team of five. I had what you could call an office partner. We shared the same kind of responsibilities. She was always sick (supposedly, the whole company sneered at her for it, and at first I defended her), she was lazy, went on numerous strolls through the company to talk to her friends on hours… While I was left with ALL the work. I escalated the issue by calling on HR. In the meeting I presented HR with all the evidence. But all it took for my co-worker to get out that meeting scot-free was to simply deny everything. That's how that works. I end up quitting, and never returned to the corporate world. And I bet you, if our superior, a very lazy women who only did color-sheets on Powerpoint and didn't mingle with ANY of her subordinates at all, would have decided between me and her, she would have fired me.
Bottom line; if you work work a smaller agency, put in some extra work if the circumstances demand it. If it's a promising endeavor, there's a point in that. Don't do it on end tho. And def don't put in extra time in a larger corporation. Be smart about it. Befriend people in power. The head of accounting who only strolls through the company singing "Give me sunshine everyday" (true story btw), the legal guy, the HR assistant. That's the way to go. Hard work won't get you anywhere these days. It's ALL about 20% of actual skill and 80% who you know e.g. who you are frinds and/or allies with.
Hey Slidebean, when does a business stop being a start up? You said you have been at it for 10 years and that Slidebean is still a start up. Just wondering
I've been at successful startups that respected my work hours. Not every job requires you work 10 or 12 hour days.
I think the new gen are pampered and lazy who uses the term quiet quitting as excuse. They complain and not entrepreneur enough to strive harder and wealthier.
I think a lot of quite quitters use theirs extra time in a side hustle to get extra money for the vacations they want. Or to try to build their own source of income. I doubt that a person that joins a startup will have the quite quitters mentality because they should know that you are building something and that demands a lot more effort than just ride something
Are you hiring remote web developer? ❤
The whole situation is just (s)hit.
I am your relative from Nigeria.. 😁
I'm hourly so this doesn't really apply to me since I get paid for the work I do, but ironically where I work going into management can be IMO a big mistake.
So far these roles have been the first in the firing line to be screwed around with by corporate and one of my managers is even struggling to go down a level to my position because we can't find a replacement. Other managers are also having to come in on their days off because we lost a managers position a couple of years ago.
'Work hard, get ahead' doesn't work anymore.
The people that get ahead are the ones tat suck-up to management the most.
The hardest worker is just saddled with more hard work, this has been 100% my experience.
If 'work hard, get ahead' was the way forward, where do you think quiet quitting came from?
How do you think people started doing it if all they had to do was just work harder?
What a really American concept to punish or get ouraged over people for not giving their company free stuff. Like, of course you should be paid according to what work you did? How is that a scandalous concept? If I work for 40 hours I should get paid for 40 hours, if I work for 80 hours, I should get paid for 80 hours? It's not like my company casually gives me money they have lying around, so why should I give them work/hours I have lying around?
(for the record: I log out at 16:00, but I also log in somewhere between 6 and 8 am usually, start early, leave early, work between 6 and 8 is often the most productive time precisely because you are the only one already awake :p)
The way I see it: I value myself and the work I do. I assume my work is precious and vaulable. Consultants bill by the hour, so why should my work be so different? If you like my work, feel free to buy more of it.
Companies expect their employees to be "no hard feelings" when they are forced to downsize people, so why is it too much to ask "no hard feelings" if I switch to a company that pays better or has more interesting work?
I have slaved away at a startup and have reaped the extra rewards. But I also burnt out pretty fast and was not able to do anything more than standard fare after a while. I guess my goals are not aligned with climbing the corporate ladder, but much more holistic in nature.
This is for sure the best video in the channel. Well done 🎉
When you say that the opportunity your provide deserves more than quite quitting, what do you mean? Are you paying your employees significantly more than the market rate? In my experience startups are cash strapped and usually pay a little less in cash compensation than comparable roles and make up for that lack of cash compensation with stock awards.
Thx for this video. As a young, retired boober (62), i fully agree with your perspective. It is ridiculous to go through what I had to go through and the life experiences I missed out on to get what I wanted. Working 12+ hours a day with minimum vacations and being on call 24-7, even while on vacation is asinine. I really don't see how a CEO can look his associates in the eye with the salary disparity. Nobody is worth that kind of money.
Through good investments and taking care of my health I am retired now, and my wife and I are living a very active retired life, hopefully for many years.
Good luck to the Millennials and Gen Z to make the work environment right again. I 100% don't believe in laziness but I sure as hell don't believe in being taken advantage of either.

Stop sharing your DNA information dudes . Myheritage and companies that you give your dna to, will make so much money with your dna info, you wont even know! And worse is what will be possible to be done with your DNA sequence in the future. You are giving away so much more.
if you work in a company that you truly love no matter how many extra hours you will put into it. You do it for the product, the project, the people, your clients, not for the money!
Startups give them "unlimited vacation time" and complain that they leave at 5pm?
Thank you
This surfaces a real problem in the world – especially in the US. There is little focus on the whole work life balance. It is super important that upper management instills a culture of work ethics that does not enforce working over to get ahead.
At the end of the day its all about priorities – you work on the things that are most important given the time available. Everything else simple has to be put on the back burner.
To get ahead one has to make an impact – and this doesn't mean working long hours. Here the classing saying "Work Smarter – Not Harder" really shines.
You cant have it all, the magic is to quiet quit and still be one of the best in your team.
There's no point in ever asking for a promotion or raise. Wow! A 5% increase in income! When you could jump companies and make 25% more.
One word: Job description
Lazy millennials
Quiet Quitting is call doing the job at a set require time as contracted. If you want more out me pay more. Boundaries need to be set and exploiting free labor doesn't work anymore. Lesson learned don't go above and beyond.
Stop moaning about your situation and work!
I really appreciate your thoughtful analysis of the concept of "quiet quitting" and how it applies to different generations. It's clear that you've put a lot of research and consideration into this topic. Now, if you could choose any destination in the world to travel to with your family, where would it be, and what's the first thing you'd want to experience there?
