The area in and around the old foreign settlement district (Kyu-kyoryuchi) is home to classy boutique avenues, where those in search of the latest brand-name goods will find all the best-known global names.

Shopping streets and arcades between Sannomiya and Motomachi feature high-class department stores, shops under train tracks sell used and youth-oriented goods, while Harborland offers unique and diverse items and souvenirs.

Sannomiya is Kobe’s busiest downtown area with Kobe’s largest train station, Sannomiya Station. It is also home to many department stores, shopping centers, restaurants, bars, and nightclubs.

Motomachi is a stylish area with apparel and variety shops. It is located between Mount Rokkō and the port of Kobe. It is located adjacent to Nankinmachi (南京町: Kobe Chinatown) and Kyū-kyoryūchi (旧居留地: a foreign settlement in the 19th century: there are several buildings from that time, now used as restaurants or coffee shops).

Kyukyoryuchi is an area in Kobe that was developed after the opening of the port in 1868. The area has many Western-style buildings that were built during the Meiji period (1868-1912) when Japan was modernizing. The buildings were used as offices for foreign companies that were doing business in Japan at that time. Today, many of these buildings have been converted into shops, cafes, restaurants, museums, and other attractions.

Chinatown Nankinmachi is one of Japan’s three major Chinatowns along with those in Yokohama and Nagasaki. It is located in central Kobe near Motomachi Station. The area has many Chinese restaurants and shops selling Chinese goods.
